A mountain cycling holiday is a challenge full of impressive views and tough climbs. Whether you are a seasoned cyclist or new to cycling, good preparation makes the difference between enjoyment and survival. Yes... survival... because those who are not well prepared can suffer greatly. Here you will find useful tips to pack smart and light so that you are ready for your next cycling adventure in the mountains!

Good preparation is half the battle

Whether you're going on a mountain cycling holiday for the first time or have climbed before: smart packing really does make a difference. The weather can suddenly change, your legs take a beating and every gram of luggage counts. That's why we share our best tips for travelling light, practical and comfortable below!

1. So your stuff stays dry (even if the weather doesn't)

We mentioned it above, but in the mountains the weather can change quickly. Sunshine one minute, a downpour the next. Our tip? Pack everything waterproof. This will prevent your clothes from getting clammy or even wet. Use drybags or sturdy ziplock bags, and make sure your panniers can withstand a good shower. Brands such as AGU have fine, waterproof bags as well as rainwear so you can hit the road prepared and worry-free.

2. Clothing: layers, layers, layers

Whether we are hiking, cycling or going on a too-cool excursion, we work with layers. It can be quite warm during the day, but as soon as the sun goes down or you go into the altitude, it cools down quickly. So think in layers: a breathable shirt, a fleece jacket for the chilly hours and a mackintosh if the weather turns.

Besides outerwear, agu rain trousers Indispensable for a mountain trek. This will keep you dry yourself and keep your energy high. Preferably choose a model with side zips. That way you can quickly pull it over your cycling shorts or long trousers when the rain starts.

A pair of warm and/or dry socks is no luxury either. We even take these with us on the plane and it takes up no space at all. And... if it gets really cold and you cycle towards higher peaks, a buff or light hat is ideal!

3. Pack your luggage smartly

We really make this a sport, because after many backpack trips, we know better than anyone else how annoying it is when you take too much unnecessary stuff with you. The same goes for bikes! An overweight bike is not what you want, especially if you are going up steep roads or unpaved paths. Therefore, look critically at every item you pack. Is it really necessary?

In addition, be selective in your choice of cooking equipment when camping. A small pan may suffice, and plastic containers can be combined as plates. For food, choose lightweight options such as instant oatmeal, nuts and dried fruit. These provide energy and also weigh little.

We understand that you do need to carry some heavier items. Make sure you keep these items close to the frame and low in the pannier. This improves stability. In addition, don't forget your first aid kit! Band-aids, blister plasters and a small bottle of disinfectant are really no luxury.

Comfort is also important

After a day full of climbing, it is nice to recover and get a good night's sleep. Even though we like to travel as light as possible, there are a few things we always take with us. Think of an inflatable pillow, stretching straps or a good book. Little things that you can enjoy a lot!
