Are you going to Prague? Then you must have heard how beautiful this city is. Its diversity makes it ideal for a city trip. This city was not destroyed during the Second World War, which means it has many medieval and historic buildings. We have listed the best sights, secret spots and restaurants for you. This will help you get the most out of your city trip to Prague!

All about Prague

Transport to and within Prague

If you choose to take a city break to Prague, you have three different options.

Flying: Flying is the easiest and fastest option. You can fly from Amsterdam to Prague in 1.5 hours. What's more, it doesn't have to be an expensive option. Once you arrive at the airport, you can take a taxi, shuttle bus, hotel pick-up service or the public transport to your hotel.

  • Costs: If you Skyscanner If you keep an eye out, you can find a return ticket between €100.00 and €150.00 per person.
  • Travel time: 1.5 hours from airport to airport.

Train: There are several trains running daily from the Netherlands to Prague and vice versa. On the route from Amsterdam to Prague, you will need to change trains in Berlin.

  • Costs: Please refer to NSInternational for the current prices. These can vary considerably.
  • Travel time: Your travel time is approximately 10 hours. Therefore, we do not recommend this option.

Tip: If you choose to travel by train and have a few days to spare, we definitely recommend spending a few days in Berlin.

Car: You can also travel to Prague by car. The distance is between 850 and 950 kilometres, depending on the route and your final destination in Prague.

  • Travel time: Your travel time is 8 to 9 hours, which is why we do not recommend this option.

Tip: If you are travelling by car, we recommend planning one or more overnight stays along the way. This will allow you to see more of Europe and stay safe.

If you are in Prague and do not have your own transport, opt for public transport. It is easy to use and the cost of public transport in Prague is very low.

Where is the best place to stay in Prague and for how long?

Prague is divided into several districts, and we have listed the best ones for you. We recommend booking as early as possible, as it is a very popular destination. How long you want to stay in Prague depends on what you want to see. Because public transport is well organised and inexpensive, you can easily see all the highlights in 3 to 4 days.

The old town: In our opinion, this is one of the most beautiful areas to stay in. This part of the city has many medieval buildings and numerous terraces. You will find many sights here, such as the astronomical clock and the famous Staromestské námestí square. The only downside is that this area is very popular and therefore also on the expensive side.

The new city: Part of this district is located in Prague 1. Here you will find many restaurants, shops and entertainment venues. On the border with the old town you will find one of the best shopping streets, Příkopě. You will also find the Instagram-famous building called the Dancing House here.

Mala Strana: This neighbourhood is located opposite the old town. You can easily walk to this area via Charles Bridge. Just like the old town, this area has beautiful medieval buildings, pretty squares and narrow streets.

The above-mentioned neighbourhoods are very popular and therefore often fully booked. We stayed just outside these neighbourhoods, in Prague 3. We found this to be no problem at all thanks to the convenience of public transport. In addition, you can stay much more cheaply in the areas just outside the favourite locations. We stayed in the Orebitska apartment complex, which you can easily book via booking.com.

What to do in Prague and the surrounding area?

Charles Bridge: This is a must-see! Although it is always extremely busy here, we definitely recommend you visit. Would you like to see the bridge without hundreds of other people? Then we recommend visiting the bridge at sunrise.

The Castle: The castle is located on the west side of the Mala Strana river. It is one of the largest palace complexes in the world with beautiful gardens. You can also enjoy a pleasant walk in the area surrounding the castle. View the many historic buildings or the famous Lennon Wall.

Old Town Square: If you are in Prague, a visit to this beautiful square is a must. In addition to the many nice restaurants and other attractions, you will find the famous astronomical clock here.

City tower: The old city tower, which houses the astronomical clock, also has a viewing platform at the very top. For 120 CK (€4.44), you can take a lift to the top.

Dancing House: If you happen to pass by, it's worth taking a photo. This modern building stands out among all the historic buildings.

Vojan Garden: This is one of the oldest gardens in Prague. It is located in the centre of the Old Town, but it is not yet very well known.

What to do in Prague and the surrounding area?

Colloredo-Mansfeld Palace: This palace is also not yet well known among tourists. It is located at the beginning of Charles Bridge, making it easy to visit. Opening hours – open every day from 10:00 to 18:00.

Jubilee Synagogue: This synagogue is located on Jurusalem Street and is one of the most beautiful in Prague.

Tunnel of Books: Less impressive than the photos online make it seem... but if you have time to spare, it's worth stopping by. In the middle of this tunnel are mirrors that make it seem as if the tunnel goes on forever.

Strelecky Island: Unfortunately, we were unable to visit this island, but we understand that it offers a magnificent view of Charles Bridge and the Vltava River. Let us know what you think!

Gardens beneath Prague Castle: These gardens are not yet very well known. They are located directly below Prague Castle (Palacove zahrady pd Prazskym hradem). Admission: 100CZK – Opening hours: 10:00 to 18:00. Closed from November to March.

Petrin Hill: As we mentioned earlier, Prague has many sights to see, and this is definitely one you don't want to miss. If you want to escape the hustle and bustle for a while, this is a great place to go. It is one of the largest green areas in Prague. You can walk up through the gardens or take the train. You need the same tickets for this train as for public transport, which is super convenient! At the top of the hill, you will find Prague's Eiffel Tower!
