Transport to and in Greece
Planning your transport to and in Greece is easy. In fact, there are several options to choose from!
Plane: With numerous international airports spread across the country, flying is the obvious choice for many travellers. Opt for major international airports such as those in Athens, Thessaloniki or Heraklion, or go for regional airports such as those in Santorini, Mykonos and Rhodes.
There are many direct flights to popular islands such as Santorini, Zakynthos and Kos. Keep in mind that in high season, prices can rise a lot. It may then be cheaper to book a plane ticket to Athens and catch a ferry from there to one of the islands.
Ferry / Ferries: The Greek islands are well connected and ferries depart daily from the mainland (Athens) and the various islands. The ferries are comfortable, cheap and fast. We used the website of Direct Ferries to check ferry times. However, we recommend buying tickets at the port itself. This will save you another few euros!
Tip: Are you travelling in the high season? Then do book your tickets online in advance to ensure you get a seat!
Transport in Greece
Explore Greece by quad bike (ATV), scooter, motorbike or car: It is by far the easiest to arrange your own transport. A quad bike or scooter is the ideal way to explore the islands. Are you with several people? Then renting a car is the most economical option. You can easily rent a quad, scooter or motorbike through your hotel or from one of the many rental shops. Do you opt for a car? Then we recommend you check out Sunny Cars. Depending on the season, consider the following prices.
Car €40+ euro Quad (ATV) €25 - €45 Engine €18 - €30 Scooter €15 - €19*Prices depend on the model, number of days and location where you rent.
*The more days you rent, the more discount you can expect.
*If you go in high season, book in advance at one of the rental shops. You can easily find these via google.
Bus: The bus is the most widely used form of public transport in Greece. This is because of its extensive bus network. In the Greek capital, Athens, you will find three bus stations. Buses leave from these bus stations to all parts of Greece.
You will also find bus stations on most islands. On Santorini, for example, we used this a lot. A bus goes here every half hour to popular spots on the island. Costs are low and almost every island has a website where you can find departure times.
In addition, of course, there is always the possibility of a taxi order. If you are in the big cities then you can use the metro/tram network.
The best time to travel to Greece
Greece has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. This makes it an ideal destination for both summer and winter holidays. The long sunny days and pleasant temperatures add to the relaxed atmosphere.
High season (June-August): If you want to enjoy a sunny holiday, this is the best travel period. These are the peak summer months, with warm temperatures, blue skies and virtually no rain. It is the ideal time for beach lovers and you can expect crowded beaches and vibrant nightlife. During this period, it is important that you book your accommodation well in advance.
Intermediate seasons (April, May, September & October): If you prefer a more budget-friendly trip with fewer tourists, the in-between seasons are the best travel time. The beaches are a lot quieter then despite it still being warm and sunny. Tour operators, bars and restaurants are open during this period and ferries still sail regularly. Ideal if you want to island hop!
Low season (November - March): You might not expect it but winter is also a great time to visit Greece, especially in the coastal areas and islands where there are still mild temperatures and bright, sunny days. This does not apply to the country's mountainous areas, by the way. Here, temperatures can drop a lot and you can even expect snow.
