Maldives travel advice

Is a trip to the Maldives safe? Yes definitely! However, there are some points to consider.

  • Drinking alcohol is prohibited on many islands. Importation of alcoholic beverages is also prohibited. Of course, this does not apply to resorts.
  • It is not recommended (as in many Asian countries) to drink the tap water.
  • Homosexuality is punishable by law. Both locals and foreigners risk a prison sentence.

As the security situation can always change, we recommend checking the current travel advice check.

Best travel time for the Maldives

The Maldives' 1,000-plus islands have a tropical climate with dry and wet seasons.

  • Dry season: late December to early April
  • Wet season: late April to early December

The best travel time is, of course, the dry season. However, it can vary slightly from island to island but in general, the dry season runs from December to April. This is at the same time the ideal time for diving and therefore also the tourist high season.

Daily budget for the Maldives

The Maldives is not exactly known as a cheap holiday destination. But we think it is definitely suitable for people on a smaller budget too.

We booked a flight to the Maldives during our round trip to Sri Lanka for around €250. We stayed on the island of Maafushi for 4 days. This island is known as backpackers island you can also find cheaper hotels here.

Mainly the excursions make the trip a bit more expensive. On average, we spent €40 p.p. per day (excluding flights and excursions).

Feed to Maldives and various islands

Flying to the Maldives.

The Maldives consists of more than a thousand islands and the main means of transport are plane and boat. You will always arrive in Malé the capital of the Maldives. From here, you will catch a boat to one of the islands.

Transport to the islands

The boat is the car of the Maldives. They are used as means of transport between islands and resorts, making them indispensable. There are two ways to move from island to island namely by local ferry and a speedboat. The ferry is cheapest but very slow, while the speedboat is fast but also a lot more expensive.

There are three options to get to an island from Malé international airport.
1. You choose to take the ferry from Malé airport to the city centre first (€2,-). From the centre, opt for a ferry (€2.00-€5,00) to an island or you opt for a speedboat (€20,-).

2. The second option is to arrange transport in advance. We did this and recommend it to everyone. It saves you a huge amount of time and effort. We went to the island of Maafushi and travelled via Instagram contacted a local organisation. Are you also going to Maafushi? Then book your transfer at Shadow Palm. You pay €20 for a speedboat from Malé airport to Maafushi. An incredibly fine organisation (also for all your other activities).

3. If you have booked a stay at a resort, the transfer is often included in the service.

Transport on the islands

Most islands are incredibly small and therefore you don't need any means of transport. Everything is done on foot or by bike!
