Best travel time for Croatia
Croatia has a continental climate which means harsh cold winters and hot summers. But temperatures can differ from one region to another. For instance, the climate in the lower coastal areas is more like the Mediterranean climate. Whereby winters are milder and summers much drier and warmer.
The best travel time is during our spring and autumn seasons:
- Spring: May & June
- Autumn: September & October
When you go during these periods, you avoid the worst heat and crowds of the summer months and can fully enjoy everything this beautiful country has to offer.

Croatia
Croatia, officially the Republic of Croatia and a fantastic destination in Europe. Located on the Adriatic Sea, this beautiful country borders Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia Herzegovina and Montenegro and shares a sea border with Italy. From ancient cities to idyllic coastal towns and from lush natural parks to breathtaking islands. This country has everything you are looking for for an unforgettable holiday.

Transport to and in Croatia
Planning your transport to and in Croatia is easy. In fact, there are several options to choose from!
Car: From the Netherlands, it is about 1400 km drive to the border of Croatia. In terms of distance, this can be compared to Florence in Italy. It's quite a journey, which is why we recommend making a stop in Germany or Austria. Would you rather continue in one go? That's possible too, but make sure you book your first stay in the north.
Tip: Do you want to take a campervan but are still looking for one that suits your needs? Check our blog Travelling around Europe by motorhome, this is what you need to know!. Here you will find everything you need to know and useful tips.
Plane: You can choose from numerous international airports scattered across the country, making flying the obvious choice for many travellers. Opt for major international airports like those in Zagreb, Split or Dubrovnik, or go for regional airports like those in Zadar, Pula and Rijeka.
Rental car: Would you rather not make the whole trip by car but still enjoy the freedom in the country itself? Then opt for the plane and rent a car locally. This will give you all the freedom and flexibility to explore the many sights at your own pace. At companies such as Sunny Cars you can easily book a reliable hire car and explore the many sights at your own pace.
Best travel time for Croatia
The weather varies by season and region so the best time to travel depends on the places you want to visit and the type of holiday you want to have.
High season (July-August): If you want to enjoy a sunny holiday, this is the best travel period. These are the peak summer months, with warm temperatures, blue skies and little rain. It is the ideal time for beach lovers and you can expect a lot of tourists.
Intermediate seasons (May, June, September & October): If you prefer a more budget-friendly trip with fewer tourists, the in-between seasons are the best travel time. In addition, May and June are the best months to visit the National Parks, when the lakes and waterfalls are flowing.
We visited Croatia in May and had occasional showers in the north. In contrast, in the south it was 30 degrees with plenty of sunshine!
