This applies not only to the popular beach resorts such as Playa del Carmen or Tulum but also precisely to the small villages such as Bacalar. Travel advice for Mexico
Mexico is subject to 3 different colour codes namely yellow, orange and in two locations red. This means you cannot just travel to all areas and there are safety risks. For example, the areas below are not recommended:
- It has been advised for some time to avoid the border area between Mexico and the United States because of crime & drug smuggling.
- Avoid the state of Tamaulipas, Guerrero, Colima and Zacatecas
- In addition, the area around the Popocatépetl volcano and the Colima volcano is not safe and the authorities indicate that you should not go within a 5 km radius of the volcano.
This may sound a bit heavy-handed now but it is just something you have to take into account. So don't let this stop you. As the security situation can always change, we recommend checking the up-to-date travel advice from the Netherlands Worldwide check.
Best travel time for Mexico
Mexico has two main seasons, the dry season and the rainy season.
- Dry season: November to April
- Rainy season: May to October
The best travel time is of course the dry season making it the tourist high season. Read more about the climate at the bottom of this page!
Visa for Mexico
As a Dutch or Belgian you have no visa needed for Mexico if you are not staying in the country for more than 6 months. You get a visa on arrival and thus a stamp in your passport with the date by which you have to leave at the latest. So you don't need to arrange a visa in advance.
However, there are some important things to consider.
- Make sure you are in possession of a return ticket or a ticket to a subsequent destination.
- Make sure you have a booking confirmation from your first accommodation(s).
Vaccinations for Mexico
When planning your trip to Mexico, you should consider the following vaccinations:
- DTP (diphtheria, tetanus and polio)
- Hepatitis A (infectious jaundice)
These are not compulsory vaccinations, but are recommended when travelling to Mexico. In addition, keep in mind Malaria, Chikungunya, Dengue and the Zika virus occur in some areas and bring DEET or other mosquito repellents.
Always check the GGD website for the up-to-date vaccination information.
Daily budget for Mexico
Mexico is a relatively cheap country to travel through. However, prices vary enormously. In the interior, for example, prices are a lot lower than in well-known tourist destinations such as Playa del Carmen, Cozumel and Tulum.
We have based the amounts below on our own tour of southern Mexico.

Transport in Mexico
In Mexico, there are plenty of options to get from A to B relatively cheaply. Each mode of transport has advantages and disadvantages and we have listed them for you. This allows you to choose the transport option that suits you best.
Rental car: Surely our favourite is arranging your own hire car. Travelling by hire car gives you the ultimate freedom. In our opinion, it is the best way to travel around the country. It therefore gives you more freedom, compared to travelling by bus. Driving in southern Mexico is safe and easy. The roads are paved and you won't encounter much traffic between villages. In some ways, it is a bit boring itself as the roads consist mainly of long stretches of straight road.
Want to rent a car? Then do so with reliable organisations such as Sunny Cars. We have good experiences with this and the rental price is always all-inclusive. So you are well insured.
Public transport: In Mexico, public transport is also well organised. Via the ADO app or website you can easily book tickets and plan your itinerary. The buses are clean, equipped with toilets and run on time. Even at the bus stations, everything is clearly marked and the staff usually speak English. However, there are a few things to keep in mind:
- The distances between locations in Mexico are great so some buses only run 2x in a day.
- Popular bus routes are often already sold out. We advise you to buy your tickets at least one day before departure via the ADO app or website. You can often book tickets no earlier than 3 to 6 weeks in advance.
- The ADO app and website are only available in Spanish. You can then collect your ticket from the ticket office 2 hours before departure.
- Bring warm clothes to wear on the bus. The air conditioning is often blowing very hard
- Take all your valuables on the bus and keep an eye on them. Your large luggage goes in the hold so you have little visibility of it.
Would you rather book all your tickets in Dutch? Take a look at the website of Bookaway.co.uk. Booking is easy and you will receive your ticket via email!
The best travel time for Mexico
Southern Mexico enjoys a year-round tropical climate and has two main seasons, the dry season and the rainy season.
Dry Season (November-April): In the dry season, it is usually around 28°C, making this ideal time to visit Mexico. Although you will find the most crowds and prices are higher during these months, it is the perfect time to explore ancient ruins, lounge on sandy shores and enjoy water activities, especially in coastal towns like Holbox and Tulum.
Rainy season (May-October): Are you looking more for green landscapes, excellent surf options and somewhat lower prices? Then the rainy season is the best time to go on holiday in Mexico. You can often expect short but heavy rain showers during this period, after which the sun breaks through again.
Tip: Hurricane season also falls during these months (September and October). Take this into account and make sure you pay attention to any warnings issued by local authorities.
