Do you need a visa for Mexico?
Getting a visa to Mexico can seem like a complex process, but with the right information, you can get through it easily. First, it is important to know what type of visa you need. This depends on the purpose of your trip. Mexico offers different types of visas, including tourist visas, student visas and work visas. Each category has specific requirements and procedures. In this blog, we share useful tips, official website and the general steps to follow when applying for a visa.
A Mexico visa for tourists
As a tourist with Dutch or Belgian nationality, you may stay in Mexico for a maximum of six months (180 days) without a visa need to apply. You will receive a stamp in your passport and a separate piece of paper on arrival at the airport. This means you do not need to apply for a visa for most holidays. If you want to stay in Mexico for more than six months, you will have to apply for a visa.
Tip: You don't get 180 days by default. So always check your passport and the number of days you were ‘given’. If this is too little for your trip, you should contact the migration service. Staying with an expired (tourist) visa can lead to arrest and eventual deportation.
Mexico visa requirements for tourists
So although as a tourist you usually no visa needed for Mexico, there are some requirements you need to meet. We have listed them for you:
1. Valid passport: It sounds so obvious, yet this is important to check. After all, the rule is that when you return to the Netherlands, your passport is still valid for 6 months should be - and you should at least one blank visa page have in your passport.
2. Return ticket or ticket next destination (exit ticket): As soon as you arrive at the airport, you must be in possession of a return ticket or a ticket to the next destination. If you are travelling around the world and have no idea how long you want to stay in Mexico, you should opt for a Onward Ticket. This is an easy and the most reliable way to get an exit ticket.

❗Please note: So as a traveller, you do not need to apply for a visa, as long as you leave the country within 180 days! As soon as you show your passport, you will receive a tourist visa upon arrival in Mexico (stamp and loose paper). You should always keep this loose piece of paper with your passport. They will take it back on departure, so make sure you keep it. At police checks, they may also ask for this piece of paper.

4. Take your time and start on time: The processing time for Mexican visas can vary, depending on the type of visa you apply for and the Mexican embassy or consulate you are dealing with.
