Travel advice for Panama
Panama currently has a yellow travel advice: you can travel there, but it is important to stay alert to possible security risks. While travelling through Panama, we simply felt safe, and the travel advisory need not be a reason for most travellers to avoid the country.
Panama is safe for tourists in large parts, especially in popular travel areas. However, it is wise to prepare well, watch your belongings and be aware of your surroundings, especially in larger cities. As the security situation can always change, we recommend checking the current travel advice check.
Best travel time for Panama
Located in Central America, Panama has a tropical climate, making it nice and warm all year round. The country has two seasons: the dry season and the rainy season.
- Dry season: December to April
- Rainy season: May to November
This does not mean that Panama is not a fine destination during the rainy season. Rain often falls in short, heavy showers, usually later in the day. After a shower it often clears up quickly, although you can sometimes be unlucky where it rains for longer periods at a time.
If you want to minimise the chances of lots of rain, you can spend the months September and October best to avoid. On average, this period sees the most rainfall.
Best travel time: If you want to minimise the chances of rain, the months December to April most suitable. This is the most popular period for many travellers to tour Panama. Just keep in mind that these months can be busier and prices slightly higher.
Visa for Panama
Are you travelling with a Dutch or Belgian passport to Panama and stay maximum 90 days, then you have no visa required. Upon arrival, you will receive an entry stamp in your passport. Make sure you actually receive this stamp, as without a valid entry stamp you could be fined upon departure.
Your passport is required upon arrival in still valid for at least 6 months are. Stay your longer than 90 days, then you may need a visa. In that case, it is wise to contact the Embassy of Panama in The Hague for the latest updates.
Beware of stopovers in the United States
Many flights to Panama make a stopover in the United States. Even if you only transfer and do not leave the airport, in most cases you have a ESTA required. You arrange this electronic travel authorisation online in advance. Without a valid ESTA, you may be denied boarding. Therefore, always check well before departure which country you are travelling through and which documents are required.

Vaccinations for Panama
When planning your trip to Panama, you should consider the following vaccinations:

How many days do you need for Panama?
How many days you need for Panama depends mainly on how many places you want to visit and at what pace you travel. If you want to combine several regions, such as the capital, the mountains and one or two coastal areas, we recommend at least three weeks take your time. That way, you'll have just a little more peace and quiet everywhere and you won't have to force choices.
If you have less time, you can also do Panama well in two weeks travel by skipping a few destinations. You can easily adapt the itinerary to your schedule. How long is the flight to Panama?
There are no direct flights from the Netherlands to Panama. Most flights make one stopover, often in the United States or Europe. Total travel time is usually between 12 and 15 pm, depending on your route and transfer time. Bear in mind that a transfer in the United States often requires additional documents, such as an ESTA. Always check this carefully before booking to avoid any surprises.
Is tap water safe in Panama?
It is not recommended to drink tap water in Panama. Therefore, use bottled water, including for brushing your teeth. Water is easily available everywhere, both in supermarkets and at restaurants. Do you need a world plug?
For outlets type A and B used, the same as in the United States. Dutch and Belgian plugs do not fit here as standard. Sockets are limited in many accommodations, making a plug with multiple connections extra handy.
How to arrange a SIM card or internet?
For mobile internet on the go, you can opt for a local SIM card or a eSIM. Local SIM cards are available at the airport and in shops of telecom providers in larger cities. This is often the most economical option if you are travelling for longer.
If you prefer to have everything pre-arranged, then an eSIM like the one from Airalo or Saily a fine solution. This gives you internet as soon as you arrive, without having to change a physical SIM card. Coverage is good in most areas, although the connection can sometimes be less outside cities and in natural areas.
