General information on Greece

Are you working on a travel plan for Greece? Then check out our tips for the best travel period, daily budget and transport to and in Greece. You can find all information about Greece here.

How to get to the island of Milos?

You can reach Milos in several ways. With more than 2 million tourists in Greece every year, transport to Milos is incredibly well organised.

By ferry/Ferrie to Milos:

The Greek islands are well connected, with daily departures from the mainland (Athens) and the other islands such as Santorini and Sifnos ferries to Milos. The ferries are comfortable, cheap and fast. We used the website of Direct Ferries to check ferry times. However, we recommend buying tickets at the port itself. This will save you another few euros!

Tip LightTip: Are you going to Greece in high season? Then book your ferry tickets in advance. This is because the ferries can be fully booked.

By plane to Milos

You also have the option of flying to Milos from Athens. Milos has a small airport where a number of flights from Athens arrive every day. However, we recommend taking the ferry.

Round trips on Milos

Milos is perfect for exploring by motorbike, scooter, ATV or car. By arranging your own transport, you have complete freedom to visit the places below. All the sights are close together as Milos is not very big. This allows you to explore the island in just a few days. We recommend staying on the island for 4 nights/5 days.

Tip LightTip: The tip we actually always give is; arrange your own transport. This is by far the easiest way to get yourself around the island. Bear in mind that in the main season, you should book your car, scooter or ATV in advance. You can easily do this online at, for example  Sunnycars.co.uk - book your rental car safely and quickly here.

Things to do on Milos, Greece

Milos is a small island and is often combined with Santorini and Paros during the island hopping through Greece. Despite its small size, there are many things to do. Below, we share with you the best sights.
Check out the map at the bottom of this blog so you can create your ideal day layout!

1. Explore the capital Plaka

The capital of the island of Milos is Plaka. Here you will find traditional white houses, churches with blue domes and colourful flowers. It is lovely to walk around here and enjoy the view of the sea.

2. Visit Plaka Castle during sunrise or sunset.

If we are talking about Plaka then this sight should definitely not be missed. Plaka Castle was once a Venetian castle but unfortunately now only the old walls are still visible. You will now find a white church standing high on the hill above the sea. It's a short walk to the top and well worth it. If you want the place all to yourself, we recommend visiting this place in the morning.

3. Sarakiniko beach, Milos

This is undoubtedly the most popular beach on Milos. Sarakiniko beach is a beautiful moon-like landscape and is therefore not a ‘normal’ beach. You will find a small stretch of beach but generally everyone is lying on the rocks. You can jump into the water from several points, perfect for cooling off!

4. Boat tour to Kleftiko Beach, Milos

Besides Sarakiniko, this is undoubtedly a place you have often seen passing by on Instagram or Pinterest. This impressive spot with large white cliffs and clear blue sea is definitely worth a visit. It is a popular spot for snorkelling or diving and there are several organisations offering boat trips to this spot.

5. Visit the fishing village of Klima

A small but beautifully coloured fishing village. By small, we mean really small, these few houses make up the famous place. You won't find the typical white houses here, but rather coloured houses painted by local fishermen. Meanwhile, the houses are no longer used by fishermen and have been converted into nice holiday accommodation. Fortunately, this does not make the place any less impressive.

6. Mandrakia Point

Another colourful fishing village on Milos is Mandrakia. These are not houses but garages closed with coloured doors. This port is still used by fishermen and you will see many traditional boats.

Tip LightTip: While you are here, we recommend eating at Medusa restaurant. Located on the waterfront, this restaurant is the ideal lunch or dinner spot.

7. Visit the village of Pollonia

This is perhaps the most popular village to stay in. It is therefore busier here than in the other villages but, on the other hand, this village has good facilities. You will find many taverns and a lovely beach!

8. Take a look at Trypiti

Although you may have seen enough white houses and blue domes by now, we recommend you take a look here. You will find traditional windmills, beautiful churches and small narrow streets to get lost in. From Trypiti, it's just a short walk to the catacombs and the ancient theatre of Milos.

9. Visit the catacombs and ancient theatre

Milos is an ancient island which has been inhabited by humans for many years. As a result, it has an impressive history. Two historical sites we recommend are the Catacombs of Milos and the ancient Theatre.

The catacombs
Opening hours: Monday to Sunday, 9.00 a.m.-6.45 p.m. Closed on Tuesdays.
Entrance fee: 4 euros
The old theatre:
Opening hours: Open location
Entrance fee: Free

10. Visit the most beautiful beaches of Milos, Greece

Our final to-do-tip is to visit the beaches of this beautiful island. Indeed, Milos has an awful lot of them and since the island is so small, you can perfectly ‘hop’ between the different beaches and villages. In our opinion, these are the best beaches:

  • Sarakiniko Beach: The moonlit beach. A unique location.
  • Kleftiko Beach: Impressive part of the island. Only accessible by boat.
  • Firopotamos Beach: A beautiful bay with boathouses and a fine sandy beach.
  • Papafragas Beach and Caves: A small beach surrounded by high white cliffs and clear blue waters.
  • Firiplaka Beach: A wide white/yellow sandy beach surrounded by rocks.
  • Alogomandra Beach: A beautiful but small bay among white rock cliffs.
  • Thiorichia Beach (Old Sulfur Mines): The beach is not that special but the surroundings are! You'll find an old abandoned mine you can walk through. Keep in mind that this beach is not easily accessible by scooter. We recommend visiting this beach by quad/ATV or car.
  • Tsigrado Beach, Milos: Definitely our favourite after Sarakiniko beach. The beach is secluded and you have to reach the beach via a ladder.

All the sights are relatively close to each other making it easy to combine them. Most places are easy to reach by car, ATV or scooter. Just keep in mind that you have to drive on dirt roads for certain stretches.
