Best travel time for the French Riviera

Whoever thinks of France thinks of the sun! The best travel time for the French Riviera is in the months May, June and September. The weather is lovely during this period and it's a lot less crowded with exceptions for of course well-known events like the Cannes Film Festival and the Monaco Grand Prix.

How many days do you need?

We recommend planning at least 4 - 7 days (including travel time) for your trip, but of course longer is always better. Four days will give you a good impression of the region, but it is impossible to see everything. Besides, it very much depends on where you stay and whether you have your own transport. So if you have little time, location is very important! Don't forget to look beyond the popular cities to discover hidden gems such as the medieval village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence or the perfume capital Grasse.

Where to stay.

You can make it as luxurious as you like in France and especially in the French Riviera! From chic hotels in Monaco with stunning sea views to beach resorts in Saint-Tropez and cosy boutique hotels and bed-and-breakfasts in smaller towns like Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. If you can't get enough of French history check out the colourful accommodation in Villefranche-sur-Mer.

Do you have a preference for a particular venue? Then make sure you book early. Especially in the small villages, your favourite accommodation may be fully booked last-minute. But don't worry; in the bigger cities there is an abundance of beautiful hotels to choose from, even at the last minute.

In the French Riviera, there is absolutely no need to be bored! This beautiful region is bursting with beautiful cities and capitals. Think for example of the lively streets of Nice to the luxurious glamour of Monaco, and from the old-town charm of Antibes to the party vibes of Cannes. Here are a few tips that will make your trip to the French Riviera unforgettable!

Must-Visit places

  • Nice: Explore the bustling markets, stroll along the Promenade des Anglais and enjoy local specialities such as socca.
  • Monaco: Experience the luxury of Monaco, from the glamour of Monte Carlo casinos to the stunning Oceanographic Museum.
  • Antibes: A beautiful old town with a bustling marina and the famous Picasso Museum.
  • Cannes: Known for glitz and glamour, yachts, nightclubs and film stars. But Cannes definitely has more to offer!
  • Èze: Don't miss Èze, with breathtaking views from the Jardin Exotique (exotic garden of Monaco) and artisan shops.

Dive into the French history of the French Riviera

Tourism in the French Riviera is not just for sun worshippers and luxury travellers - it is also a cultural hotspot, with impressive museums, galleries and historical sites.

For example, visit the Fondation Maeght, a modern art museum just outside Saint-Paul de Vence, with works by Chagall, Giacometti and Miró. Or discover the beautiful works of art at the Matisse Museum in Nice. Are you a fan of the Picasso? Then a visit to the Picasso Museum in Antibes should not be missed during your trip.

If you are more of an outdoors person and are looking for a mix of history and art, we recommend going to the medieval village of Èze to go. You will find not only breathtaking views, but also artisan shops and galleries showcasing local arts and crafts.

So, whether you are an art fanatic or want to enjoy narrow streets, picturesque villages and Instagram worthy spots during your trip, the French Riviera is definitely the place to be!

Sporting activities and full-day trips

Are you more into a bit of action? Then enjoy water sports such as snorkelling, kayaking or paddleboarding in the crystal clear Mediterranean Sea.
