Langkawi, a tropical paradise in northern Malaysia, is an archipelago of 99 islands, with Pulau Langkawi being the largest. Located about 30 kilometres west of mainland Malaysia, this island is a popular destination among backpackers. And for good reason - we too stayed here for 5 days. Langkawi offers the perfect mix of relaxation, adventure and nature. Think snow-white beaches, lush jungle and mangrove forests, impressive waterfalls and the famous Langkawi Sky Bridge. Curious about what you can do, where to eat and where to stay? In this blog, we share all our tips for Langkawi!

How do you travel to Langkawi?
Langkawi is easily accessible from several cities in Malaysia. Many travellers travel from Kuala Lumpur or Penang to the island, and so did we. Here's how to get to Langkawi easily from these destinations.
From Penang to Langkawi
We ourselves thought this was really madness, taking the plane for such a small trip?! But yes, it turned out to be the most practical option after all. This is because the ferry between Langkawi and Penang no longer runs (since covid), making the plane the fastest option as well. There is also a bus, but if you're only in Malaysia for a short time, we don't recommend this option as you'll lose a lot of travel time. Want to know more about departure times, the different options and prices? Then take a look at 12GoAsia.
Tip: Keep in mind baggage fees for checked baggage if you fly with budget airlines. Booking via the platform 12GoAsia helps you find the best deals!
From Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi
By plane: Want to travel quickly from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi? Then the plane is the best choice! In just an hour, you'll be on the island and thanks to the many budget airlines, tickets are often cheap. Easily compare all available flights on 12GoAsia to find the best deal.
By bus and boat: Another option is bus and boat, but bear in mind that the journey takes considerably longer. Take a bus from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan in Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis (6-7 hours, €10-€15). From there, hop on the ferry to Langkawi (€8). Book your tickets easily and quickly via 12GoAsia.
By train, taxi and boat: This last option is the most time-consuming but if you are not bound by time, it is a nice way to see more of the country. Take the train to Alor Star (5 hours), catch a taxi to Kuala Kedah Jetty and then hop on the ferry to Langkawi. Curious about all the ins & outs of these routes? Read our blog: Travel from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi and read more about these three options!
Tips for transport on Langkawi island
The most fun and practical way to explore Langkawi is by scooter. This gives you all the freedom you need to explore the island at your own pace. We hired our scooter through our hotel, Langkawi County Lodge, and that was really ideal. The distances on the island are relatively small, so you can be on the other side of the island within an hour. Highly recommended if you want to make the most of your stay!
Tip: Never give up your passport when renting a scooter. Are you asked for this? Then find another rental company. The safest option is to ask your hotel about a reliable rental company, such as A ONE SUPER DUBER Scooters on Langkawi. It is also wise to make a short video of the scooter before departure. That way, you avoid discussion about any damage afterwards. Better safe than sorry!
Grab taxi booking
We are big fans of Grab and use this app during all our travels in Asia. In Langkawi, however, Grab is less reliable than in major cities. Indeed, there is no guarantee that a driver will be available at all. Don't want to drive yourself? Then ask your hotel about alternative transport options, such as private transfers or a driver for a day.
Tip: The Grab app requires internet access. It is therefore useful to buy a local SIM card or arrange an e-sim card, for example through Airalo.

What to do in Langkawi?
The island of Langkawi has an awful lot to offer! From impressive waterfalls to mangrove forests and the famous Sky Bridge. We share our best tips with you here!
1. Go to the Seven Wells Waterfall (Telaga Tujuhn Waterfall)
Although this list is not in order, the Seven Wells Waterfall was undoubtedly one of our favourites. This impressive waterfall, also called Telaga Tujuh Waterfall, is close to the Sky Bridge and gets its name from the seven natural pools you can swim in. It is a unique hotspot that, in our opinion, should not be missed.
Tip: The Seven Wells Waterfall is at its most spectacular between September and December (rainy season). In the drier months, the waterfall can be less impressive, but the surroundings and natural pools are still worth a visit!
At the foot of the waterfall, you will find a few small shops and restaurants. Make sure you buy something to drink here if you don't have water with you, because from this point the climb up begins. The hike to the top is not extremely tough, but don't underestimate it. With the tropical heat and many steps, it can be quite a challenge. Along the way, you may encounter monkeys and exotic birds, after which you can take a dip in the crystal-clear water at the large waterfall. Those with some energy left can climb further up from here. You will find more water pools and a lookout bridge here!
note: Bring some cash. Since October 2024, you pay an entrance fee of MYR 10 (€2.16) per adult and MYR 5 (€1) per child.

Extra tip: Hike to Machinchang Peak
Fancy a tough challenge? Then the hike to Machinchang Peak is highly recommended. Starting at the top of the Seven Wells Waterfall, this adventurous route takes you straight through the jungle to an insane viewpoint. We understand it is a tough trek, requiring you to climb over rocks using ropes in some parts. But once at the top, you will be rewarded with spectacular views of the mountains, the Sky Bridge and the Andaman Sea.
Make sure you go out well prepared: wear sturdy shoes and high socks (against leeches), bring plenty of water and use the app Maps.me for offline navigation. The complete hike takes about four hours (there and back) and can be a fantastic addition to your Langkawi trip!

2. Take the cable car to the Langkawi Sky Bridge
We mentioned this bridge above, but for a spectacular view of Langkawi, don't miss the Langkawi Sky Bridge. With one of the steepest cable cars in the world, you will ascend 660 metres above sea level, while enjoying panoramic views of the jungle and the Andaman Sea. From the cable car station, it's a short walk to the Sky Bridge, an impressive 125-metre-long bridge suspended high above the jungle. The views here are insane and on a clear day you can see for kilometres across the sea.
Book your ticket for the cable car in advance to avoid the queue at the ticket office. This ticket gives access to the cable car, the 3D Art in Paradise museum and other attractions. Opt for a combination ticket including the Sky Bridge to skip the queue there too.
→ Book your ticket for the Langkawi Sky bridge easily and quickly here.
Tip: This outing is perfect to combine with a visit to the Seven Wells Waterfall, which is nearby. After your visit to the Sky Bridge, you can drive here and cool off in the natural pools. An ideal combination if you ask us!

3. Explore the mangrove forests of Langkawi
We hesitated for a while whether we wanted to do this, but how glad we are that we did! A boat takes you into the Kilim Geoforest Park, an impressive nature reserve with vast mangrove forests and giant limestone cliffs. This geological heritage is one of the most beautiful places on Langkawi and definitely a must-do. During the tour, you sail through narrow waterways, past limestone caves and through dense mangrove forests. Along the way, you will encounter all kinds of animals, such as monkeys, fish and, of course, the iconic red-brown eagle, from which Langkawi gets its name.
We opted for a boat trip, but if you want a bit more action, a 4-hour kayaking trip a great alternative. Preferably choose a tour with a local guide, so you learn more about the ecosystem and the animals that live here.

4. Visit Tanjung Rhu Beach
In the north of Langkawi, close to the mangrove forests, you will find Tanjung Rhu Beach, one of the island's most beautiful beaches. This wide, white-sand beach is surrounded by limestone rock formations and crystal-clear waters. A perfect place to relax and soak up the sun for a few hours. Prefer to do something active? Rent a kayak or SUP board and explore the area from the water!
Tip: Short on time? Tanjung Rhu Beach is often the last stop on a mangrove tour. You get lunch here and can take a dip before returning to your hotel.

5. Enjoying the beach Pantai Cenang
This is Langkawi's most popular beach, with soft white sand and a lively atmosphere. Over two kilometres long, you can relax on a beach bed, hire a jet ski or just enjoy the view. In the evening, the beach comes alive at Kalut Café and Bar, where you can relax in a beanbag with your feet in the sand while enjoying live music and spectacular fire shows.
Tip: During our visit to Langkawi, there was construction going on in many places, including at Kalut Café. This can make the area look a bit messy, but don't let this put you off. In fact, Kalut Cafe and Bar is a great place to end your day!
6. Opt for a relaxing afternoon on Tengah Beach
Want to spend an afternoon relaxing on a quieter beach? Then Tengah Beach is the perfect choice. This beach is at least as beautiful as Pantai Cenang, but a lot less crowded. You reach the beach via Hidden Langkawi, the only beach bar here. From there, walk to the left and you'll come to a couple of rocky outcrops. At low tide, you can walk around them and discover a secluded stretch of beach, a hidden gem!
There are no sun beds on the beach itself, but next to Hidden Langkawi is a resort where you can rent beds. Convenient, because here you can also order something to eat and drink straight away.

7. Enjoy a beautiful sunset among the local
For an authentic experience, we recommend ending an evening at Laksa Ikan Sekoq, a simple but atmospheric dining spot right on the waterfront. You shouldn't expect too much but the plastic chairs, relaxed atmosphere and water views make this the perfect spot to end your day.
8. Have a great meal at one of the many night markets!
Do you, like us, love local street food? Then Langkawi is the place to be! Every evening, a night market is held somewhere on the island, where you can sample the tastiest local dishes. Think grilled satay, crispy roti canai and fresh tropical fruit. The location changes every day, so check in advance where you need to be. Most markets start around 5pm.
Monday: Ulu Melaka Night Market
Tuesday: Kedawang Night Market
Wednesday: Night Market Kuah Town
Thursday: Temoyong Night Market
Friday: Ayer Hangat Friday night market
Saturday: Night Market Kuah Town
Sunday: Padang Matsirat Night Market

Tips for good restaurants in Langkawi
If you are exploring, you need to eat well, and in Langkawi you can eat delicious food thanks to the many night markets and good hotspots. These are our favourite places to eat:
- Indiana Vegan Café & Yoga: A cosy hotspot where you can go for the tastiest smoothie bowls, fresh juices and well-topped sandwiches.
- Hidden Langkawi: An atmospheric beach club where you can have a delicious lunch or just watch the sun sink into the sea with a cocktail in your hand. The menu features mostly western dishes such as pizza, pasta and burgers.
- Smiling Buffalo: A hidden gem for breakfast, lunch and good coffee. Located just outside the hustle and bustle, this atmospheric café is the ideal breakfast or lunch spot.
- Restoran Almaz: For authentic Malaysian dishes, this is the place to be. This hidden gem is not on Google Maps, but you'll find this restaurant right in front of the hotel Casa del Mar Langkawi.
- Yasmin Syrian Restaurant: Fancy something different? At Yasmin's you will taste the flavours of Syrian cuisine and it really is fantastic! From freshly baked flatbreads to flavoursome kebabs and hummus, everything here is prepared with love.
- Kalut Café & Bar: Plop down in a colourful beanbag on the beach and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. This is the perfect place to end the day with a cocktail in hand. Be sure to linger, as a spectacular fire show is staged here every night.

Where to stay in Langkawi?
Most travellers choose to stay near Pantai Cenang, and so did we. This is where you'll find most of the restaurants and accommodation, so you don't always have to grab a scooter. We slept at Langkawi County Lodge, an absolute must! The rooms are basic, but the atmosphere is fantastic and breakfast is a treat every day. Other great options in Pantai Cenang:
- Bed Attitude Hostel Cenang: One of the best hostels on the island if we are to believe our fellow travellers. So ideal for backpackers who want to meet other travellers.
- The Temak Villa: An atmospheric stay in green surroundings which was on our favourites list. The treehouses and lovely pool make it extra special. Centrally located, yet quiet.
Right next to Pantai Cenang is Pantai Tengah. This area is slightly less crowded, but still offers plenty of restaurants and accommodation. Often prices here are just a little lower than in Cenang.
- T Star Cottage Langkawi: Affordable and simple bungalows, ideal for travellers looking for some peace and quiet, but want to be close to conviviality.
- Cloud 9 Hotel: A fine mid-range option with a relaxed atmosphere.
Got something to celebrate or just love luxury? Then these stays in the North of Langkawi perfect for you:
- Panji Panji Tropical Wooden Home: Stylish wooden villas with beautiful furnishings, an outdoor bathroom and a tropical garden.
- Looma Private Pool Villas: Luxury villas with a private pool, perfect for those looking for privacy and comfort.
- Berjaya Langkawi Resort: This resort offers idyllic chalets on stilts above the water. Its location on a private beach and beautiful nature make for a unique experience.
