Sri Lanka is full of natural wonders, but one of the most special places can be found in Sigiriya. This town is best known for the imposing Lion Rock, also known as the Rock Fortress, which towers high above the jungle. What many travellers don't know, however, is that you get the very best view of this iconic Lion Rock from the adjacent Pidurangala Rock.
Located right next to Lion Rock, also known as Sigiriya Rock, Pidurangala is often mentioned in the same breath as this famous landmark. However, it is definitely an experience in itself. The climb is adventurous and from the top you will enjoy perhaps the most beautiful view in all of Sri Lanka: right on the Lion Rock itself. In this blog, we tell you everything you need to know before your visit to Pidurangala Rock. From the route and entrance to practical tips and our personal experience. That way, you'll be prepared for your trip!

Why choose the Pidurangala Rock
Many travellers opt for the Lion Rock, but as far as we are concerned, it is okay to Pidurangala Rock really shouldn't be missed during your itinerary through Sri Lanka. Whereas Lion Rock is best known for its ancient fortress and ancient frescoes, Pidurangala is more about nature. The climb is a lot quieter, cheaper AND the views are at least as spectacular.
From the top, you can see the jungle to the horizon, with the huge and ancient Lion Rock rising high above the landscape in the middle of the greenery. Especially around sunrise or sunset, this spot is magical.

How do you get to Pidurangala Rock?
Pidurangala is just a ten-minute drive from the centre of Sigiriya and is easy to reach by tuktuk or scooter. At the entrance is a small car park where you can leave your scooter or tuktuk. From there, you can walk to the starting point of the climb in a few minutes. The trail starts at the Pidurangala temple, where you buy a ticket and have to put on a sarong. So keep in mind that you need to cover knees and shoulders, as you first walk a short stretch through the temple area.
Note: If you want to visit Pidurangala Rock at sunrise or sunset, make sure you have arranged transport. This is because wild elephants live in this area. Although the chances of encountering them are slim, it is not safe to walk or cycle to the car park.
Practical information
- Entrance fee: LKR 1,000 per person (about €3)
- Ticketcounter: Tickets will be sold from 5am to 6pm.
- Duration of the climb: 20-30 minutes on average.
- Difficulty: short but sometimes steep and adventurous, not suitable for those with mobility problems.
- Clothing: cover your knees and shoulders at the temple: afterwards, you can take them off. They also offer free sarongs at the temple.

The climb to the summit
The climb to Pidurangala Rock is relatively short but adventurous. In total, it will take you about 20 to 30 minutes, depending on your fitness, pace and when you go. The first part consists of stone steps that are fairly easy to walk up. On the way, you pass an impressive reclining Buddha statue and then you're almost there!
After the Buddha statue, the path gets a bit rougher and the last stretch requires climbing over boulders. Although the path is tough at times, it is doable for anyone with a normal level of fitness. Just make sure you wear sturdy shoes and bring a bottle of water!

The view from Pidurangala Rock
Once at the top, you will be rewarded with a view you won't soon forget. Before you lies the Lion Rock, while from all other sides you look out over endless jungle, lakes and mountains in the distance. The summit itself is a large flat rock where you can walk around, take photos or just enjoy some quiet time.
We chose to go just after sunrise! It's a lot quieter then and you're at the top within 20 minutes. Do you want to see sunrise? Then go on time and bear in mind that you will be on top of the rock with a lot of people and often have to wait along the way.
Note: Drones are not allowed in this area. We really don't recommend using them either. According to several online articles, the bees on top of the rock react very aggressively to drone noise.
Tips for your visit
- Take cash with you. At the temple, you can only pay in cash.
- Take a torch or phone light with you if you go before sunrise. Indeed, the path is largely lit, but not all sections are. An extra light is therefore not a luxury.
- Avoid flip-flops. The last stretch over the boulders really requires sturdy shoes.
- Take a water bottle with you. Preferably not plastic bottles, but a refillable bottle like this one from Dopper. Then your water stays nice and cold too, really ideal!
- Stick around. Many travellers head straight back down after their photos, but if you stay a bit longer, you often have the summit almost all to yourself.
Our experience with Pidurangala Rock
For us, the climb to Pidurangala was one of the highlights of our trip through Sri Lanka. Those who read several blogs will see that we use this phrase more often but every place has something unique and so does Pidurangala. It may not be the famous Lion Rock, but that is precisely what makes it so special. The adventure of the climb, the Buddha statue on the way, and ultimately the mega cool view!
While the Lion Rock is undoubtedly impressive, we opted for the Pidurangala rock. Simply because from here you can see Sri Lanka's most iconic image with your own eyes. Atop the Lion rock, you don't have that feeling.

Pidurangala Rock vs Sigiriya Lion Rock
As we mentioned earlier in this blog, you can see the famous Lion Rock itself or choose to climb to the adjacent Pidurangala Rock. Both experiences are worthwhile, but they offer a completely different experience. Below you will find the main differences conveniently listed:
| Pidurangala Rock | Sigiriya Lion Rock | |
|---|---|---|
| View | Breathtaking views of Lion Rock and the surrounding jungle. | Panoramic views from the top, but of course you can't see the Lion Rock itself. |
| Experience | Adventurous climb, quieter, less tourists and relaxed atmosphere. | Busier, more organised and touristy, but impressive for its history. |
| History | No ruins on top, it's mostly about nature and views here. | World-famous archaeological site with palace remains, frescoes and historical significance. |
| Price | About €3.00 per person. | About €25 per person. |
| Time & effort | Climb is adventurous, with some scrambling at the end. | Wider steps and more accessible, but a longer climb. |
So which option is best for you depends on your budget and interests. Of course, you can also opt for both options especially if you want to go for a trip during sunrise and sunset!
