How do you travel to Mirissa?

Located on the south coast of Sri Lanka, Mirissa is a popular stop. The place is easily accessible from Colombo as well as from other well-known destinations such as Galle, Weligama, Ahangama, Hiriketiya and Ella. Depending on your itinerary, budget and travel style, you have several options:

From Colombo (airport) to Mirissa

Most travellers start their journey in Sri Lanka on Bandaranaike International Airport near Colombo. From here, Mirissa is about 150 kilometres away and that will take you on average about 2.5 to 4 hours over, depending on traffic.

The most comfortable option is a private transfer or taxi, which you can arrange in advance through your accommodation, locally at the airport or via 12Go. This is especially nice after a long flight. A cheaper option is the train. You then travel first to Colombo Fort Station and from there take the train towards Matara, with a stop in Mirissa or Weligama. The train journey along the coast is beautiful, but bear in mind full carriages and limited luggage space.

From Galle, Weligama or Ahangama to Mirissa

If you are already travelling along the south coast, Mirissa is easy to combine with other destinations. From Weligama are you there in about 25 minutes, from Ahangama in about 40 minutes and from Galle in about 1 to 1.5 hours.

With your own scooter or tuktuk, this is very doable and you can stop wherever you want. If you prefer not to drive yourself, you can use a tuktuk taxi or a PickMe ride. Prices are relatively low and drivers can be found everywhere.

From Ella to Mirissa

Coming from inland, for example from Ella, then the landscape changes from green tea fields to palm trees and beaches along the way. With a taxi, private transfer or private tuktuk do you do here on average 4 to 5 hours about. You can easily arrange a taxi or private transfer at your accommodation or via 12Go!

The cheapest way is by bus, usually with a change in Wellawaya or Matara, but bear in mind that you will be on the road longer!

Travelling through Sri Lanka by tuktuk

We have our entire journey through Sri Lanka done with a tuktuk and that was without a doubt the most fun way to travel around. It is not only practical, but also an adventure in itself! We hired our tuktuk via tuktukrental.com, an absolute must that will make your trip really extra special. And with the discount code ‘THOUSANDTRAVELMILES‘ you also get a nice discount!

Tips for transport in Mirissa

Mirissa is manageable and many places are within walking distance of each other, but to explore more of the area, own transport is handy. Luckily, there are plenty of options in Mirissa, depending on what you are comfortable with.

  • Tuktuk: For short distances, a tuktuk taxi is by far the most common mode of transport. You simply stop one along the road or arrange one through your accommodation. Always agree on a price in advance to avoid discussions afterwards. In Mirissa, drivers also drive via the emerging app PickMe (Sri Lanka), similar to Uber, which is especially useful if you want to know in advance what a ride will cost and prefer not to negotiate.
  • Scooter hire: If you want a bit more freedom, renting a scooter is a nice option. With this, you can easily drive to places like Coconut Tree Hill, Secret Beach or beaches towards Weligama. The roads around Mirissa can be busy, but it's fine to do. You usually rent a scooter through your hotel or a local rental company in the village. Check Google Reviews beforehand so you know what to expect.
  • Car with driver: For longer distances or if you are travelling with several people, a car with driver is the best option. Local drivers know the routes well and will stop without problems if you want to see something along the way.

What to do in Mirissa

A popular beach destination on Sri Lanka's south coast, Mirissa combines a laid-back atmosphere with plenty of fun activities. From sunbathing on the beach and surfing to whale watching and sunsets at cosy beach bars. Below, we share our favourite tips and highlights.

1. Relax on Mirissa Beach

Mirissa Beach is Mirissa's main beach and exactly the kind of place where you can easily hang out for a whole day. It is a wide beach with plenty of space for swimming, surfing or bodyboarding. Along the beach you'll find several rental shops, so if you feel like taking to the water spontaneously, you can easily arrange a surfboard or bodyboard here.

Prefer to do nothing? Then you'll also find plenty of beach bars along Mirissa Beach where you can have something to eat or drink with your feet in the sand. And if you still don't feel like leaving at the end of the afternoon: no problem. Many beach bars stay open, so you can also stay here for drinks, food and a beautiful sunset!

2. Coconut Tree Hill: the photo spot of Mirissa

Coconut Tree Hill is a well-known spot in Mirissa and is best known for its sea views with palm trees in the foreground. Located right on the coast, the hill is especially popular around sunrise and sunset. During the day it can get quite crowded here, making the experience a little less ‘idyllic’. Go early in the morning, when it is quieter and the temperature is a lot more pleasant.

Coconut Tree Hill remains a nice place to stop for a while, even though some of the palm trees are now less beautiful (they no longer have leaves). So think of it mainly as a short photo stop.

3. Enjoy a drink at Sunset Bar

Have you been to Coconut Tree Hill? Then keep walking down. At the foot of the hill is Sunset Bar, a relaxing spot right by the sea. Here you can flop down on a cushion in the sand or in a hammock and look out over the ocean with a drink in your hand. At the end of the day, this is a nice stop, especially if you want to linger for sunset.

4. Discovering Secret Beach

Secret Beach has long since ceased to be a secret, but remains a fine beach in Mirissa. The small bay is sheltered between rocks and palm trees and often has clear, calm waters. Especially in the morning, it is an ideal place to cool off and the beach is still relatively quiet. Later in the day, more and more travellers know how to find this spot and it can get quite crowded.

Around sunset, the beach also often fills up, being a popular place to watch the sun disappear into the sea. In high season, there is usually a beach bar open, music and a cosy atmosphere. Don't expect a deserted beach, but still a nice place for the end of the day.

5. Sunset at Parrot Rock

Located at the far end of Mirissa Beach, Parrot Rock is another popular spot to watch the sunset. You walk to the rock via a narrow sandbank at low tide, after which you make a short climb to the top. From here, you have views of the beach and ocean. Go on time, as it gets more crowded around sunset and at high tide it is a bit more difficult to get to the top of the rock.

6. Surfing in and around Mirissa

Mirissa is a good place to surf but the waves are especially suitable for surfers with a bit more experience. Along the beach you will find several surf shops where you can rent boards or book lessons. Surf lessons of about 1.5 hours start from an amount of 8,000 LKR (€22 depending on the exchange rate) per person.

If you are just starting out or want to quietly improve your technique, the nearby Weligama a much better choice. This village is known as the surf spot for beginners on Sri Lanka's south coast. Along the beach you will find plenty of surf schools and rental shops, making it easy to rent a board or book a lesson!

7. Day trip to Polhena Beach

About a 20-minute drive from Mirissa is Polhena Beach, one of the best snorkelling spots on the south coast. Thanks to the reef, the water here is often calm and clear, making snorkelling from the shore quite possible. With a bit of luck, you might even spot wild sea turtles here. Bear in mind that there is little shade and lots of dead coral on the seabed, so water shoes are no luxury. Along the beach you can rent snorkelsets and find a few simple tents for food and drinks. Preferably go in the morning, when the water is calmest.

8. Whale watching (responsibly)

Mirissa is known as one of the places in Sri Lanka where you can see whales, but not every excursion handles this responsibly. There are tours where boats get too close to the animals or actively follow them, which can cause stress. If you would still like to have this experience, consciously choose a small-scale provider or a private boat with an experienced captain who respects the guidelines and keeps enough distance.

Most whale safaris leave early in the morning and last several hours. You have the best chance of seeing whales in Mirissa between November and March, with occasional outings in April. With a bit of luck, you'll also spot groups of dolphins along the way!

9. Snorkelling with turtles in Mirissa

Around Mirissa, there are several places where, with some luck, you may encounter turtles while snorkelling. Especially along rocky stretches of coast and quiet bays, they are regularly spotted as this is where they find food and seek shelter. You can easily rent a snorkelset at various locations in Mirissa and enter the water yourself. Of course, it remains a matter of luck: turtles are wild animals and do not allow themselves to be planned, but that makes it extra special when you see one.

Fine snorkellingspots in Mirissa include Sunset Bar at Coconut Tree Hill, where you can enter the water from the shore and turtles are regularly seen. Also Polhena Beach is known for calmer waters and a greater chance of spotting turtles. If you prefer guidance or just a little further out to sea, you can also opt for a snorkelling tour with a local guide via Getyourguide!

10. Take a day trip to Galle Fort

Sri Lanka used to be a colony of the Netherlands and this is well reflected in Galle Fort. There are still plenty of European influences within the city walls, from old buildings to the street layout and architecture. Here, you walk past old warehouses, charming streets and characteristic buildings interspersed with boutiques, cafés and good restaurants.

From Mirissa, you can travel to Galle Fort within an hour by bus, scooter or (your own) tuktuk. If you have some room in your schedule, it would be nice to stay here for a night. And if you do stay here for a night look for the boutique hotel Fort Bazaar fits your budget!

11. Swimming at Paradise Beach Club

Fancy an afternoon of relaxation without sand between your toes? Then Paradise Beach Club a nice change. Located right on Mirissa Beach, this beach club has a large pool overlooking the sea. Order something to eat or drink and you can use the sun beds around the pool.

12. Other fun things to do in Mirissa

Are you staying in Mirissa a bit longer or have you already seen the highlights? Then there are plenty of extra things to do.

  1. Nightlife in Mirissa: Do you like a night of dancing and drinking? Then Mirissa is the place to be! Especially in high season, there are beach bars with music playing where you can have a drink until late in the evening. For a party, try Salt, especially on Sunday evenings. During the day you can also have great food here, and in the evening it turns into a cosy beach bar with DJ. The Doctor's House, just outside Mirissa towards Matara, also organises regular parties.
  2. Yoga & wellness: In Mirissa, you will find several yoga and wellness spots. You can easily take a single yoga class or book a massage in between. Ideal to complement beach days without taking over your entire schedule. We recommend you check out Secret Root Spa or Badora Spa.
  3. Explore beaches and villages around Mirissa: Hiring a scooter or tuktuk and just following the coast is one of the most fun things to do. Heading towards Weligama or Matara, you will come across small beaches, viewpoints and local eateries. It's these spontaneous stops that make your stay here extra fun.
  4. Visit the local port: The port may look a bit cluttered, but that is exactly what makes it a fun place to look around. Between the brightly coloured boats, you can see how the daily fish catch is brought in and prepared for transport. Local fishermen are often busy loading and unloading and are usually happy to briefly talk about how everything goes here. A nice stop to get a glimpse of what daily life is like on the coast of Sri Lanka.

Tips for good restaurants in Mirissa

Mirissa has lots of different restaurants. From Sri Lankan curry buffets and fresh fish on the beach to good coffee and vegan breakfast spots. These are our favourite restaurants in Mirissa, scattered around the village and the beach:

  • Shady Lane: One of the most popular breakfast and lunchspots in Mirissa. It's a hip place with a nice atmosphere and a varied menu. The pancakes in particular are a hit here, but you'll also find good coffee and healthy bowls here.
  • Salt Mirissa: For fresh fish with your feet in the sand, Salt Mirissa is the place to be. A laid-back beach joint by day and a fine place to dine in the evening while the sun sets. The seafood here is simple but well prepared.
  • Mila Mirissa: A fine, accessible spot on Mirissa's main street. The menu includes poké bowls, burgers and tuna steak. Ideal if you want something a little different from Sri Lankan curry.
  • Dhana's Curry Pot: This is a really nice restaurant if you fancy a real Sri Lankan curry experience. At Dhana's Curry Pot, you slide in for an extensive buffet of different curries. You eat unlimited food here and get a good impression of the local cuisine.
  • Curry Gedara Mirissa: Similar to Dhana's Curry Pot and just as tasty. Here too, you'll enjoy a buffet of traditional Sri Lankan curries. A good choice if you want local food at a good price.
  • No. 1 Dewmini Roti Shop: This is the place in Mirissa for roti. Don't expect luxury, but fresh rotis with different fillings at a good price. Ideal as a quick bite.
  • Eli's Stroopwafels & Coffee: Yes, really: syrup waffles in Sri Lanka. Dutch Eline bakes fresh syrup waffles with different toppings here.
  • Dumplings Café (Galle): Not a Mirissa spot, but highly recommended if you make a trip to Galle. Good coffee, cold brews and delicious buns.

Our favourite spots in Mirissa

In Mirissa, too, you have plenty of choice when it comes to fine accommodation. As Mirissa is for many travellers one of the last stops during a round trip through Sri Lanka, it is nice to have a nice place to stay. We often book last minute ourselves and therefore always save a few good places in our Booking.com list. These were our favourite in Mirissa:

  • The Secret Guesthouse: The Secret Guesthouse is one of those places where everything is right. It is centrally located, has a beautiful garden with pool and nice seating areas. The rooms are also spacious and comfortable, with air conditioning, fridge and Wi-Fi.
  • D Canal House: If you have a little more budget to spend, D Canal House is a good choice. This small-scale boutique B&B has a warm, atmospheric feel and is set in the middle of a tropical garden.
  • JJ's Hostel Mirissa: For those who like to meet other travellers, JJ's Hostel Mirissa is a good fine option. The hostel organises regular activities, making it easy to connect. There is a swimming pool, a cosy atmosphere and in high season you can join yoga classes in the morning.
  • Oltremare Mirissa: This is a fine and affordable accommodation in Mirissa, ideal if you want to stay comfortably without it having to be immediately luxurious. The resort is just a bit quieter, but still a short distance from the beach and restaurants. Rooms are spacious, clean and practical, with air conditioning and a private balcony or terrace.

Mirissa is a popular place, especially during the high season. Do you have a specific accommodation in mind or would you like to stay somewhere for several nights? Then it's smart to book your stay in advance!

How many days do you need in Mirissa?

We recommend three to four nights stay in Mirissa, so you can both chill out and do the most fun activities. With four nights you have the most space to spot whales, explore the beach, rent a scooter, catch sunsets ánd occasionally plan nothing. Stay three nights, then it is also doable, but you will have to make a bit more choices in what you do and don't do.
