This is what you need to know about Mount Cristoffel in Curaçao

Climbing Mount Christoffel is one of the most popular activities on the island and offers a perfect change between days at the beach. Although we found the view from the top perhaps less spectacular than we expected-maybe because we are spoilt by previous trips-it is still a fun experience. The climb is quite tough, so that's why we are happy to share our tips with you!

Getting to Mount Christoffel

If, like us, you are staying on Curaçao near Jan Thiel or Willemstad keep in mind that it is about an hour's drive to the entrance of Cristoffel Park. This is because the mountain is located all the way in the west of Curaçao. A rental car is therefore indispensable and also ideal, as you can organise your day completely as you wish and immediately discover more of the island. For example, after your hike, head to one of the beaches On the west side of the island!

Christoffel Park opening hours and prices

Christoffel Park is open daily from 06:00 to 14:00, but for the Christoffel Mountain climb, you need to get out of bed early. In fact, it is compulsory to start the climb before 10.00 am, as it simply gets too hot after that. The earlier you start, the nicer the hiking will be. We ourselves bought the tickets around 6:15 and started the hike around 6:35. This is because you still have to drive a bit into the park before you reach the foot of the mountain. Besides, don't forget that from Willemstad, you are about an hour away.

You can get a ticket to climb Mount Christoffel or one of the other routes in the Christoffel Park at the visitor centre. You can easily park your car here and walk to the ticket office. Prices are as follows:

The starting point of Mount Christoffel

You have a choice of two starting points if you want to climb Mount Christoffel. Option one is to start the hike from the Christoffel Park visitor centre. It will then take you about three hours to reach the summit. Option two is to drive your car up to the foot of the mountain. From there, the climb will take you another 1 to 1.5 hours or so. Despite starting early, it soon became hot and we were glad we parked the car at the foot of the mountain. We therefore recommend choosing option 2.

What does the hike to Mount Christoffel look like?

Once you have parked your car, the walk can begin. The route is clearly marked with yellow arrows and dots on rocks and trees. Depending on your fitness level and how often you pause, the climb to the top takes about an hour to an hour and a half. Quite honestly, the hike is quite tough so give yourself time.

The start of the walk is relatively easy. The path is flat and you can walk along nicely. However, the path soon becomes steeper and you encounter large stones. Closer to the top, you occasionally have to use your hands to continue climbing. But don't worry, it's perfectly doable for anyone in good shape. Once you reach the top, you have a 360-degree view of the island and a lovely breeze. In clear weather, you can even see Bonaire!

Tips for climbing Mount Christoffel

  • Start on time: We cannot say this often enough! Start your climb as early as possible, at least before 10am, to avoid the worst heat.
  • Wear closed shoes: Make sure your shoes have a good grip to keep you stable on the rocky trails.
  • Mosquito spray: Bring mosquito spray as mosquitoes are nice and active in the early morning.
  • Sunburn: The higher you get, the stronger the wind. Lovely, but because of this you don't realise you are burning.
  • Take plenty of water with you: At least one, but preferably two litres per person.
  • Breakfast good: Even if it is early, make sure you have a good breakfast and take some snacks for the road.
  • Backpack: Maybe logical but make sure you have a good backpack that you are comfortable walking and climbing with. Our Thousandtravelmiles backpack is ideal and contains enough pockets for all your stuff.
  • Bring swimwear: After the hike, you can cool off at one of the beautiful beaches nearby.
