Practical tips and information for your Suriname trip!

Those flying to Suriname will arrive in Paramaribo. We recommend staying here for a few days or using this as your home base during your trip through Suriname. There is a lot to see in the capital, so it is not surprising that this city is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. There are plenty of cool sights like Fort Zeelandia, the local markets and the famous Palm Garden. Want to give local cuisine a try? Then order roti or pom. If you thought you already knew these dishes, you will find that they are much tastier in Suriname itself.

The best time to travel to Suriname

Suriname has a tropical climate, with both dry and wet seasons, and the best months to visit this beautiful country are from February to April and from August to November. The time in Suriname is four or five hours earlier than in the Netherlands. As a result, you may suffer from a little jet lag and have to get used to the new time.

In the period of February to April and from August to November temperatures are pleasant (25-30°C on average), and the roads to the interior are usually passable. This allows you to fully enjoy everything Suriname has to offer.

Dolphin spotting: February to April

Do you really want to spot dolphins? Then it's best to go during the period from February to April. During a cruise on the Suriname River, you can see the most beautiful sides of the country and enjoy the dolphins at the same time! These animals sometimes come swimming next to your boat and entertain you with their high jumps. You would almost forget that this is a rare species. If you love birds, a trip along the river is also a great choice! The tour guide can tell you all about these birds. Book your trip on time to make sure you get to go on this unforgettable trip.

Turtle spotting: March to August

For nature lovers, the period between March and August is highly recommended. This is the season when sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. Beaches such as Galibi and Matapica are the places to experience this magical moment. The enormous leatherback turtles, which can grow up to 2 metres long, are particularly impressive.

Owru Yari: a December full of celebration

If you love to party, December is the month to visit Suriname. The whole month is dedicated to Owru Yari, or New Year's Eve. The streets of Paramaribo are filled with music, dancing and impressive pagaras (traditional fireworks). On New Year's Eve, there is 24 hours of partying, with street parties and performances where everyone comes together. It is a unique opportunity to end the year in tropical atmospheres and start a new one!

Public holidays in Suriname

Suriname has a rich mix of cultures and religions, which makes for a diverse range of holidays. Here are some key holidays: New Year, Holi Phagwa, Freedom Day, Divali, Independence Day and Christmas! Keep in mind that during this period locals also have time off.

Visa for Suriname

As a Dutch or Belgian you have no visa required to travel to Suriname. Instead, prior to your trip, you must obtain a Entry Fee Voucher application. This is a mandatory document that allows you to enter the country. More information on the application procedure can be found at Netherlandsworldwide.co.uk and the official website of the Surinamese consulate in Amsterdam

Vaccinations for Suriname

When planning your trip to Suriname, it is important to consider recommended vaccinations. Although there are no mandatory vaccinations, it is advised to protect yourself against:

  • DTP (diphtheria, tetanus and polio)
  • Hepatitis A (infectious jaundice)
  • Yellow fever

It is also wise to always take a good mosquito spray with you so that you are well protected from any mosquito bites (Malaria). Always check the GGD website for the up-to-date vaccination information.

Electricity in Suriname

Boring... but useful to think about beforehand. In Suriname, they use different types of sockets. Despite the fact that most often, the ‘Dutch’ sockets we are familiar with, it can be handy to bring a world plug.

International Driving Licence

Would you like to rent a car or motorbike and go exploring? Then it is useful to know that a Dutch driving licence is valid in Suriname for a maximum of 14 days after arrival. Are you staying longer? Then you need an international driving licence (IRB). You can easily apply for an international driving licence at ANWB shops.

Money matters and Security in Suriname

In Suriname, cash is indispensable. Many shops and restaurants do not accept debit or credit cards, so make sure you always carry enough cash. Bear in mind that withdrawing money at an ATM often incurs extra costs. It is therefore convenient to withdraw a larger amount in one go.

Tips on safe PIN transactions:

  • Preferably choose an ATM in a safe, high-traffic area and preferably go during the day.
  • Travel to the vending machine by taxi or in a group for extra safety.
  • Store your money safely at your hotel immediately and take only what you need.

Internet in Suriname

When you arrive in Suriname, you naturally want to be able to go online right away. Fortunately, arranging the internet can be easy with an e-SIM, such as the one from Airalo. An e-SIM is a digital SIM card that you install via an app, eliminating the need for a physical SIM card. This saves you time and hassle on site.

How does it work? Download the Airalo app, choose a suitable data plan for Suriname, and follow the simple steps. Within minutes, you will have internet, without having to stand in long queues or search shops. Ideal if you want to immediately check your itineraries or let family know you have arrived safely.

Day trips and multi-day trips!

If you like an active holiday, Suriname has a lot to offer. As we mentioned earlier, you can keep Paramaribo as your ’home base’ and then take several trips into the interior. For instance, you can opt for beautiful one-day hikes or multi-day jungle treks. Just make sure you always book your trip with one of the well-known tour operators so you know exactly what to expect!
