What are the game rules of False Moths?

Finally a game where you can cheat! Try to get rid of as many cards as possible your way. Sit on them, drop them, throw them over your shoulder or put them in your pocket. Anything is possible but of course there is a catch. You cannot be caught by the guard beetle. In addition, there are special action cards in the game that allow players to thwart each other.

Starting the game

First, the guard beetle card is dealt out. The player chosen places this card face-up in front of him. The remaining cards are then shuffled and dealt. In total, all players receive eight cards. The remaining cards form the draw pile, with the top card placed face-up next to the draw pile. From then on, this is the discard pile. With the open card, you only have to look at the number. If the first card is an action card, this action expires.

Gameplay False Moths

Once the discard pile is laid down, the game begins. The idea is for players to play a card where the number is one higher or lower than the top card in the discard pile. If a player cannot play a card, he or she draws a card from the draw pile.

Exceptions:
1. Is a card with the number 1 in the discard pile? Then a card with the number two or five may be placed on top of it.
2. If there is a card with the number five, a card with the number 4 or 1 may be placed on top of it.

In addition, action cards may be used

Action cards in the game False Moths.

There are five different action cards in the game. These are the spider, mosquito, cockroach, ant and false moth. Below, we explain how to use these action cards.

False moth: This card may neither be placed on the discard pile nor given away. So this card must be made to ‘disappear’ by a player. This can only be done by cheating. Does the player with the Guard Bug have this card? Then it may be placed directly on the discard pile.

Mosquito: As soon as the action card with the mosquito is placed on the discard pile, the other players must hit it with their hand. The slowest player, gets one hand card of his choice from all other players.
Note: The action cards with cheating moths cannot be given away.

Spin: If this action card is placed on the pile then the active player may immediately give a hand card of his choice to another player.
Note: The action cards with cheating moths cannot be given away.

Cockroach: Is a cockroach played? Then all players place a card of their choice with the same number on it as quickly as possible. Only the fastest player may leave the card in place. The rest must take back their card.

Ant: As soon as an action card with an ant is played, the other players must all take a card from the deck.

Rules on cheating at False Moths

Despite being allowed to cheat, there are some important rules that each player must follow. Each player is allowed to have his or her cards removed in a creative way. Think of dropping a card on the ground or hiding it up your sleeve. But this is not as easy as you think. In fact, you have to follow the three rules below.

  1. Each player must hold their cards above the table
  2. Only one card may ‘disappear’ at a time. This means you cannot drop four cards on the ground in one go.
  3. The last hand card may not be discarded by cheating. So it may not be dropped on the ground but must be placed on the discard pile.

Catching a cheater

The aim is for the player with the guard beetle to catch the cheaters. As a guard, you are not allowed to cheat yourself, so you play fair.

Does the player with the guard beetle see another player cheating? Then he or she shouts ‘caught!’ as quickly as possible. The game is paused at that point.
Note: Other players may not help catch the player with the guard beetle.

Caught! - Pausing the game

After the player with the guard beetle shouts ‘caught’, the game is paused. During this time, players may not secretly make cards disappear. If a player is rightly caught, he or she must take back the card. In addition, the cheater gets another card of his/her choice from the player with the guard beetle & gets the guard beetle card. This means that this player now has the role of catching cheaters.

Falsely accused

Does a card land with a bang? Yes... bummer if you have a packet floor lying around! But does the player with the guard beetle accuse the wrong player? Then the guard must take a card from the draw pile and continues to hold the role of the guard beetle.

Tip: Agree well in advance that everyone is honest about whether they got caught. It is not the intention to lie about it.

End of the game and scoring

The game ends immediately when a player runs out of hand cards. All other players may now no longer discard cards and the number of points are added together. These points are recorded as minus points.

The following scoring applies here:
1. A grade card is one minus point
2. An action card is five minus points
3. A cheating moth is ten minus points.

After all rounds have been played, the minus points are added up. The player with the fewest minus points wins the game!

How many rounds are you playing?

A total of as many rounds are played as players joining. If there are 5 of you, then 5 rounds will be played.

It may happen that the draw pile becomes empty during a round. If this happens, the top card of the pile is set aside. The remaining cards are shuffled and form a new draw pile.

Each round, a different player gets the guard beetle card. This is always the player to the left of the current guard.
