What train classes are available in Sri Lanka?
Trains in Sri Lanka have several classes. The price difference between the classes is usually small, but the level of comfort and the overall experience can vary considerably. Especially if, like us, you prefer to travel in a compartment where the windows and doors can be opened.
- Year 3: This is the simplest option. You sit on hard benches and there are often standing places as well. The windows and doors are usually open and there are fans in the compartment.
- 3rd class with a reserved seat: This class is the same as standard third class, but with a pre-allocated seat. This means you don’t have to look for a seat when the train is busy.
- Year 2: In second-class, the seats are slightly more comfortable and there are also fans. The windows and doors can usually be opened, which makes this class popular with many passengers who like to take photos or look out of the doorway.
- 2nd class with a reserved seat: This is often the most popular option for the train journey from Kandy to Ella. You are allocated a fixed seat and the carriages are usually more comfortable than in third class.
- First class with a reserved seat: In first class, you travel in air-conditioned carriages with comfortable seats. The windows and doors are usually kept closed here, which makes it harder to take photos.
- Observation class: This is a special first-class carriage at the front of the train with large panoramic windows. The view is stunning, but the windows here cannot be opened.
With a reserved seat ticket You’ll always have a fixed seat. That means your seat will remain free if you want to walk through the train for a moment or have a look out of an open door. Without a reserved seat, you might end up having to stand, especially on busy routes. And let’s just say… that’s not exactly a barrel of laughs (Yes… we speak from experience!). So it’s best to book your ticket in advance via the the Sri Lankan Railways’ official ticket website or GetYourGuide.
How often does the train run from Kandy to Ella?
Now that you have an idea of the different train classes, it’s time to decide which train best suits your plans. There are several trains running daily on the route between Kandy and Ella. The early train is often the most popular, as it allows you to travel the entire journey in daylight and fully enjoy the views along the way.
It’s also worth bearing in mind that trains in Sri Lanka don’t always run exactly on time. They often give an estimated time at the station, but in practice this doesn’t always turn out to be entirely accurate. So try not to worry about it too much and keep your plans flexible. You’ll get there in the end.
Tip: always check the current departure times with your accommodation or directly at the station before you set off.
How can you buy train tickets for the journey from Kandy to Ella?
This train journey is hugely popular, and you’ll notice that straight away when you try to book tickets. Tickets with reserved seats, in particular, are quite a challenge to get hold of. The first time we went, we took a chance and bought a second-class ticket on the morning of the journey itself. The result? Hours spent standing or sitting on the floor. Not ideal… and that’s exactly what we want to spare you.
Unfortunately, things haven’t got any easier in recent years. Due to high demand, many tickets are snapped up straight away by ticket platforms, which then resell them at higher prices. Whilst this is often still affordable for travellers, it mainly means it’s harder to book train tickets directly yourself. Fortunately, there are several ways to manage it anyway.
- Booking train tickets via a travel platform: One of the easiest options is to book your tickets via a platform such as GetYourGuide. Here, you can often book tickets with reserved seats in first or second class. The advantage is that you can book well in advance and are often still flexible when it comes to cancelling right up until shortly before departure. Do bear in mind, however, that you’ll pay more for this than if you manage to get hold of the tickets yourself. In some cases, the tickets will be delivered to your accommodation, but you may also have to collect them from the station.
- Book tickets via the official website: You can also try buying your tickets directly via the official website of the Sri Lanka Railways. Tickets usually become available here 30 days in advance. In practice, however, the most popular trains are often fully booked very quickly, as many seats are snapped up straight away by resellers.
- Buying tickets at the railway station: Another option is to enquire about reserved tickets at a railway station. You can do this, for example, at Colombo Fort or in Kandy. Whilst this used to be quite common, it seems to be getting increasingly difficult these days to get reserved seats this way. Still, it’s definitely worth a try if you happen to pass a station. Sometimes you’ll get lucky and there’ll still be seats available.
- Choose an alternative route: If you can’t get hold of tickets for the whole train journey from Kandy to Ella, you could also choose to travel by train for just part of the route or take an alternative route. How much do train tickets cost in Sri Lanka?
Train travel in Sri Lanka is surprisingly cheap. In the most basic class, you often pay just a few euros, whilst a more comfortable seat usually costs around It will cost you between €9 and €10 per person.
These prices apply only if you book your tickets directly through the official railway operator. If you choose to book via a travel platform or an intermediary, the prices are often much higher due to additional service charges.
How does travelling by tuk-tuk work?
Are you travelling through Sri Lanka in your own tuk-tuk? If so, you can still easily combine the train journey from Kandy to Ella with your itinerary. If you choose a rental company such as Tuktukrental, you can make use of a handy transfer service. You simply specify where you’d like to board the train and where you’d like to get off. In the meantime, a driver will take your tuk-tuk to your final destination. As soon as you arrive, your tuk-tuk will be waiting for you there.
You don’t need to take your luggage onto the train either. Anything you don’t need can be left safely in the tuk-tuk. The cost of this service is around €42, excluding a small amount for fuel.

Below you’ll find practical information and useful tips to help you make the most of this special train journey in Sri Lanka.
Tips for avoiding the crowds and securing a spot
- Make sure you arrive at the station on time: Are you going to buy your ticket? Make sure you arrive at least an hour before departure and allow for queues. It’s best to check a few days in advance to see if there are any tickets left.
Please note: the chances of this working are slim, so we recommend that you check a few days in advance to see if any train tickets are still available, especially if you’re planning a last-minute trip. - Consider buying a 3rd-class ticket: In third class, there are more carriages, so you’re simply more likely to get a seat.
- Your seat will be allocated: When booking a ticket, you usually can’t choose your seat. Your seat is already allocated on your ticket, so you’ll just have to wait and see where you end up.
- Get off at Peradeniya (instead of Kandy): Try to board at Peradeniya station, just outside Kandy. Travellers coming from Colombo regularly get off here, which means seats become available.
- Choose your departure time wisely: The first train of the day is popular, but that also means it’s the busiest. Travelling later in the day is much quieter, but bear in mind that you’ll be travelling at dusk or in the dark for part of the journey.
- Avoid weekends and busy months: It can get particularly busy in December and at weekends due to local travellers.
Practical tips for travelling by train
- Bring some food and drink with you: Snacks are sometimes available, but the selection is limited. Make sure you bring some snacks and plenty of water with you.
- Travel as light as possible: Large suitcases or backpacks make things more difficult on a crowded train. Luggage can often be stored above the seats, but the less you take with you, the more relaxed your journey will be.
- Get ready for basic toilets: The toilets on the train are basic and not very clean. You should therefore bring your own toilet paper, tissues and, if necessary, hand sanitiser.
- Please have your ticket and passport to hand: You may be asked for your ticket during or after the journey. You may also be asked to show your passport, so make sure you can get hold of it easily.
- Sit on the right-hand side for the best view: If you have a choice, it’s worth knowing that the view varies depending on the section of the journey. Between Kandy and Nanu Oya, the right-hand side often offers the best view, whereas on the stretch towards Ella, the left-hand side is better.
- Please take care to ensure your safety when doors are open: Hanging out of the doorway is a brilliant experience, but do be careful. There are posts along the track, there are tunnels, and the vegetation can be sharp.
- Check for yourself where you need to get off: Stations are not always clearly announced. With an offline map (for example, via (Maps.me) you can easily keep track of where you are.
- Don’t expect a tight schedule: Delays are common and can be quite long. Try to remain flexible and see it as part of the experience.
- Expect curious stares from the locals: For many locals, you’re just as interesting as the view. A smile or a friendly nod is often appreciated and immediately leads to a pleasant interaction.
- Bear in mind the weather in the mountains: It can suddenly get chilly whilst you’re out and about. A cardigan or light jacket is no luxury, especially as windows and doors are often left open.
