Why a visit to the Federal Territory Mosque is worthwhile

The Masjid Wilayah Persekutuan, better known as the Federal Territory Mosque, is an impressive mosque in Kuala Lumpur. Construction began in 1998 and the mosque was officially opened to the public on 25 October 2000. It is one of the largest mosques in Kuala Lumpur and can accommodate as many as 17,000 worshippers at a time.

It is not only a place to pray, but also an oasis of calm for anyone who wants to escape the hustle and bustle of the city or the heat of the tropical sun. In addition, there is even a school located within the complex.

A visit to the mosque is extra special because you free guided tour can get. We found this hugely interesting: you learn more about the history and construction of the mosque, as well as about Islamic religious traditions. As far as we are concerned, this is definitely one of the most valuable and special experiences in Kuala Lumpur.

How do you get to the Federal Territory Mosque?

The mosque is located in the northwest of Kuala Lumpur, about a 20-minute drive from the city centre. The easiest and fastest way to get to the temple is by taxi or a Grab (the Southeast Asian variant of Uber). From the centre, you can get to the temple in about 10-15 minutes and the ride costs no more than €2 to €4. There is also a local bus, but this option is less practical as you still have to walk a bit.

What you need to know before your visit to the Federal Territory Mosque

The Federal Territory Mosque is a must-visit if you ask us. So... Whether you come for the extraordinary architecture, a free tour or just a nice photo, the tips below will help you make the most of your visit.

1. This is what you can expect

Inspired by Istanbul's famous Blue Mosque, the Federal Territory Mosque combines Ottoman and Malay architectural styles. The result: elegant blue domes, tall minarets and an impressive interior. One of the highlights are the stories told by the volunteer giving the tour. It is a fine way to learn more about both the mosque and Islamic culture.

2. Opening hours and entrance

The mosque is free to enter and can be visited almost daily. Just keep in mind that opening hours may vary due to prayer times and religious holidays. Generally, you can visit from 10:00 to 15:00 hour. Retrieved from Friday the mosque is open from 10:00 to 11:30 hour and from 15:00 to 16:30 hour.

Want to make sure you won't find yourself in front of a ‘closed door’? Then check the current prayer times in advance (at the top of the blue bar) via the website of the Federal Territory Mosque.

3. Best time to go

Late morning is a fine time to visit the mosque, especially as it is still quiet and not so hot. Keep in mind that it can be busier around prayer times and they don't give tours or let visitors in.

4. Clothing and behaviour

As it is a religious site, there are clear dress codes. Make sure your shoulders and knees are covered. Women are actually always given a Hijab and Chador so you comply with the dress code. Taking photos is allowed, but always do so respectfully!
