Are you going to Sri Lanka? Then we recommend including Sigiriya in your planning. This unique place has an incredibly beautiful natural phenomenon namely the Sigiriya Lion Rock. It is one of the most popular sights in Sri Lanka and a must-see for many. The natural phenomenon is a huge rock which was the former fort of King Kassapa. You will find impressive murals, gardens and the remains of this palace can still be found here. The Lion Rock is one of the eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites and therefore cannot be missed in your trip through Sri Lanka.

Pidurangala Rock vs Sigiriya Lion Rock

You've probably read about it online or maybe seen it in photos. But there are two options if you want to view the Sigiriya Lion rock. You can climb the Lion Rock itself or choose to view it from a distance on the Pidurangala Rock. Both rocks have pros and cons. We opted for the Pidurangala Rock.

The reason we chose the Pidurangala Rock in the first place is the view! This is because you have a perfect and unique view of the Lion Rock from here. This view is especially impressive during a sunset or sunrise. It is a magical place and a moment you don't want to miss when you go to Sri Lanka. Apart from the Lion Rock, you also have a panoramic view of the valley here.

By climbing the Pidurangala Rock, we missed the remains of the palace but, on the other hand, managed to avoid many tourists. Besides, visiting the Pidurangala Rock is a lot cheaper than the Lion Rock. In fact, the Lion Rock's entrance fee is about €25,00 and the entrance of the Pidurangala Rock is only €2,50.

How long does it take to climb the Pidurangala Rock in Sri Lanka?

You start the walk by passing a white temple. You pay an entrance fee of €2,50 and opt for a free scarf to cover your shoulders and legs. Once past the temple, you may take off the scarf.

After this, the climb to the Pidurangala rock begins. It is a fairly strenuous hike of 30/40 minutes. At the top, you have to climb a small stretch over boulders, which can be challenging. Give yourself a little more time and check out the reclining Buddha and the beautiful murals.

Tip: We recommend wearing good shoes as you have to climb the last part over huge rocks. In addition, take plenty of time and bring a large bottle of water and a torch (charged phone). If you visit the place during sunrise or sunset, your way there or back is in the dark. We think it is feasible for everyone as long as you also take time to rest in between.

How do you get to Pidurangala Rock, Sri Lanka?

The entrance to Pidurangala is about 2 kilometres north of the entrance to Sigiriya Lion Rock. If you are staying in the city of Sigiriya, it is a very short drive to the base of the rock. Alternatively, many visitors spend the night in Dambulla, a 30-minute tuk-tuk ride to Sigiriya.

Tip: We read this tip on www.reisjunk.nl and we are happy to pass it on to you!
Travel Junk: ”Want to see the sunrise or sunset here? Then make sure you have arranged a tuktuk as this area is home to many elephants. The road there is in the middle of the jungle so it is not safe to walk here in the dark”.

What are the opening times and admission prices of the Pidurangala Rock?

The entrance fee for Pidurangala Rock is LKR 500 per person (€2.50). This is a donation to the temple. Tickets will be sold from 05:00 to 18:00.

Tip: Drones are not allowed in this area. We really don't recommend using them either. According to several online articles, the bees on top of the rock react very aggressively to drone noise.

Where is the best place to stay in Sigiriya?

You can choose to stay in Sigiriya or in Dambulla. Both places offer accommodation in different price ranges. We ourselves chose to stay in Sigiriya and make the most of this super cool scenery in this area!

Find hotels in Sigiriya or Dambulla.
