How do you travel to Tangalle?
Located on Sri Lanka's southern coast, Tangalle is easily accessible from both Colombo and other popular destinations along the coast and inland. Many travellers come here from Weligama, Mirissa, Ella or a safari in Yala or Udawalawe National Park. Depending on your route and travel style, you can opt for the train, bus, taxi, tuktuk or a private transfer.
From Weligama or other south coast towns to Tangalle
Coming from Galle, Mirissa, Weligama or Hiriketiya, Tangalle by private tuk-tuk is about 1 to 1.5 hours drive.
You can also choose to go by local bus. Local buses run regularly and are cheap, but often stop which means they take longer. Want faster and more comfortable travel? Then a taxi or private transfer is a fine option. You can easily arrange this via your accommodation or the app PickMe (Sri Lanka).
Tip: Agree a price in advance when travelling by tuk-tuk taxi to avoid surprises.
From Ella to Tangalle
If you travel from inland, for example from Ella, the landscape slowly changes from green hills to tropical coast along the way. With a private tuktuk, taxi or private transfer, you'll do an average here 3 to 4 hours about. This is the most efficient way. A cheaper option is the bus, usually with a change in Wellawaya.
Tip: Travelling with your own tuktuk? Then choose to travel via the way B35 travel. This is because the road runs right through two national parks, so there is a good chance of encountering wild elephants!
From Yala or Udawalawe National Park to Tangalle
After a safari in Yala or Udawalawe National Park, Tangalle is a perfect first stop! From either national park, you'll travel in about 1.5 to 2.5 hours to Tangalle. Many accommodations are happy to help arrange transport, often combined with an early safari and direct transit. So be sure to check with your accommodation!
Travelling through Sri Lanka by tuktuk
We did our entire trip through Sri Lanka by tuktuk and it was, without a doubt, the most fun way to travel around. It is not only practical, but also an adventure in itself! We hired our tuktuk through tuktukrental.com, an absolute must that will make your trip really extra special. And with the discount code ‘THOUSANDTRAVELMILES‘ you also get a nice discount!

Tips for transport in Tangalle
A scooter or private tuktuk is the finest way to explore Tangalle and the surrounding area. Roads are quiet and you can stop wherever you want with your own transport. Prefer not to drive yourself? No problem either, there are plenty of options even then.
- Tuktuk: For short distances in and around Tangalle, the tuk-tuk is ideal. You arrange a tuk-tuk via your accommodation, but just as easily by raising your hand along the road. There is almost always a tuk-tuk driving by. Clearly agree on a price in advance, so there are no surprises on arrival. You can also use the app PickMe (Sri Lanka), similar to Uber. Although the app is still in development in Sri Lanka, drivers are increasingly available in Tangalle and the surrounding areas. The advantage is that you see the fare in advance and don't have to negotiate.
- Scooter hire: Renting a scooter is another good option. The roads around Tangalle are relatively quiet and take you past beaches and small villages.
- Car with driver: If you are travelling with several people or want to cover longer distances, a car or minivan with driver is a fine choice. Local drivers know the region well, often choose the best routes and wait quietly while you stop somewhere to explore. This is also a nice option if you combine Tangalle with, for instance, a safari or another destination along the south coast.
Tip: To use PickMe, you need internet. Therefore, arrange a local SIM card or opt for an e-sim, for example via Airalo or Saily. We have had good experiences with both parties.

What to do in Tangalle
Tangalle is one of those places where you automatically shift down a gear, but still have enough variety to fill your days nicely. Most travellers stay here 2 to 3 nights. That way, you'll have time for beaches, surfing, good food and sightseeing without having to fill up your entire schedule.
1. Head to beautiful Silent Beach
Silent Beach is one of those places you come to Tangalle for. It is absolutely the most beautiful beach we saw during our tour of Sri Lanka. The beach is about 4 kilometres from Tangalle and is easily accessible by tuktuk or scooter. Parking will cost you 300 LKR (€0.83 depending on the exchange rate).
If you come by bus or taxi, let the driver know you want to get off at the Amanwella Resort. From the junction with the main road, it's about a 10- to 15-minute walk to the beach. If you are staying near Goyambokka Beach, you can also walk to Silent Beach. Count on about 15 to 20 minutes.

2. Eat the tastiest fish in Tangalle
Tangalle is a fishing village and this is reflected in the restaurants along the coast. Many places serve fish caught the same day. Don't expect elaborate menus, just a few types of fish freshly prepared for you!
If you want to be sure you are eating really fresh fish, then Breakpoint a nice place. Here, you can often choose which fish you want to eat and how it is prepared. Its seaside location also makes it the ideal place for a nice evening meal.
3. Learn to surf at one of the many surf schools
Tangalle is a good place to learn to surf, precisely because it is a lot quieter here than other places along the south coast. Although the place is not known for this, you will find several surf schools where you can take lessons or rent a board.
Tangalle Surf School is a well-known surf school with good reviews. You can go here for lessons, but you can also rent a board there if you want to go out on the water independently. Lessons usually last 1 to 2 hours and are often given in the morning.
Tip: If you have surfed before, beaches in the area, such as Hiriketiya, are a better choice. However, bear in mind that it is a lot busier here.
4. Explore the area by scooter or tuktuk
One of the best things to do in Tangalle is to go out on your own by tuktuk or scooter. Just outside the village, you drive past rice paddies, small villages and local workshops. This is how we found vast rice fields here that remind you of Bali. Ideal to combine with highlight like the Rock Temple (Mulgirigala Raja Maha Viharaja)!

5. Visit Tangalle's local market
Any Sunday a large local market takes place in the centre of Tangalle. You'll find fresh vegetables, fruit, fish, spices and clothes. The market is best visited in the morning when it is not yet so hot. You can find the market here at Google Maps!
6. Go chill out for a day at Goyambokka Beach
Located close to Tangalle, Goyambokka Beach is one of the better-known beaches in the area. It is a nice place to have a drink or lunch and is surrounded by rocks. The big advantage of Goyambokka Beach is that you can swim there relaxed. This may sound crazy but on the south coast there is a strong current so this is not always obvious.

7. Visit Mulkirigala Rock Monastery
Located about 15 kilometres from Tangalle, Mulkirigala Rock Monastery is an old rock monastery that is still in use. The place is not easy to reach because, as the name suggests, you have to climb quite a few steps first. After climbing more than 500 steps, you will arrive at several cave temples with murals and reclining Buddhas.
Take your time here. Including the climb and exploring the temples, you will soon be around two hours. For the entrance fee, you pay around LKR 500 (€1.38 depending on the exchange rate).
Tip: Wear light or white clothing as a sign of respect, and make sure your knees and shoulders are covered.
8. Go on safari to Udawalawe or Yala National Park
Tangalle is a good base for a safari. Udawalawe National Park is about a 1.5-hour drive away and is known for its high chances of seeing elephants. Want a mix of animals? Then we recommend opting for Yala National park. This is the third largest national park in Sri Lanka and incredibly popular. This is because in addition to elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and water buffalo, this park is where you have the greatest chance of spotting a leopard in the wild!
The easiest way is to arrange a safari through your accommodation or in advance online via Getyourguide. Most safaris start early in the morning and last half a day. By lunchtime, you will often be back in Tangalle.

Tips for good restaurants in Tangalle
Tangalle does not have a trendy food scene, but rather small restaurants with delicious food! Expect fresh fish, curries and Sri Lankan classics. Along the beach and in the centre, you will find plenty of places to eat somewhere different every night. Below, we list our favourite restaurants in Tangalle for you.

Our favourite spots in Tangalle
Although Tangalle is not mega touristy, it has plenty of nice and fine accommodation. We often book our accommodations last minute and therefore always set a few favourites in our Booking.com lists. These were our favourites:
- Julianu: A nice and small-scale stay with friendly owners. The atmosphere is personal which makes it a nice place to stay longer. At the moment, Julianu no longer seems available through Booking.com, but possibly through other channels or direct contact.
- Sea View Tourist Inn: A simple but pleasant accommodation overlooking the sea. Ideal if you don't want to spend too much and are mainly looking for a quiet place to sleep, close to the beach.
- Star Light Cabanas & Restaurant: A nice place with simple cabanas, lovely people and the beach 2 minutes away!
- Palm Paradise Cabanas & Villas Beach Resort: A green and spacious accommodation with cabanas and villas, just outside the busiest part of Tangalle.

A fine choice if you're looking for a bit more luxury but don't want to stay in a big resort. Just keep in mind that this hotel is quite far from the city centre.
