The game Qwixx
Qwixx is a dice game where each player tries to tick as many numbers as possible in the four different colours. The more crosses in a colour, the more points. The player who has accumulated the most points wins the game. Meanwhile, you can play several different variants and extensions of Qwixx buy from trusted parties such as Bol.com.
What are the game rules of Qwixx?
The game Qwixx has several variants and expansions. We explain below the rules of the basic game. The rules of the game are simple and anyone can join. Because of this, we think it is a perfect game for our backpack trips.
Each player gets one score sheet and a pen or pencil. You then choose a player to start (active player). This player gets to roll the six dice first.
1. Ticking numbers
Before you start, it is useful to know how to tick the numbers. The idea is that during the game you should always tick the numbers left to right tick. However, you are not obliged to start on the far left - it is allowed to skip one or more numbers. Skipped numbers may not be ticked afterwards, so you ‘lose’ them.
Tip: Put a dash in the numbers you skip. This will prevent you from accidentally ticking them later.
2. Gameplay Qwixx
The starting (active) player rolls the six dice first. After the roll, the player must two actions perform:
- The active player adds up the pips of the two white dice and clearly calls out the number of pips. Each player (including non-active players) may now tick this number in a colour of their choice, but they do not have to! This action must be performed first before the active player may proceed to the next action.
- The active player may then combine one white die with one coloured die of his/her choice. The player counts the number of eyes and crosses out the corresponding number in the corresponding colour on the scoring pad. This second action is not obliged and applies only to the active player.
The active player may not be able to tick any numbers because they have already been ticked. If this happens, it unfortunately counts as an unsuccessful throw. On the scoring sheet (at the bottom), you then mark the failed rolls with a cross. The other players (non-active players) do not have to do this.

Once the player has performed both actions, the turn goes to the next player (play clockwise). This player is now the ‘active’ player and rolls the six dice and performs the two actions again in the correct order.
3. Close colour to the game Qwixx
You can close a colour (row) when you at least five crosses have put in this row. You do this by ticking the number on the far right of the row and saying; I close colour.....
When a player locks a colour (row) then this player may also tick the box with the lock. This cross is included in the final score!
If the closing of a colour (row) occurs during act 1 (white dice), the other players may also close this colour. The square with the lock may also be ticked by the other players. If a player has fewer than five crosses in this colour (row), then the last square with the lock not be ticked!
The colour (row) is now closed to all players and no more numbers may be ticked. The die of that colour is removed from the game.
4. End of the game and scoring
The game ends immediately when someone ticks his fourth failed throw or when a second colour (row) is closed.
Tip: You may close the second and third colours simultaneously during action 1 (white dice).
For example: The colour (row) blue is already closed. A player then rolls 12 (2×6) with the two white dice. Then several players may close a row. For example, player (1) can close the colour red while at the same time player (2) ticks the yellow 12 and closes.
After this, it is time for the scoring. Below the scoreboard, it says how many points a certain number of crosses in one colour earns. You add up these points and subtract the number of minus points from the failed throws. The total of this sum is your final score. The player with the most points wins the game!
Who is the game for and where can I buy Qwixx?
Anyone from 8 years onwards can play the game Qwixx. In addition, the game is easy to explain and the language of your opponent does not matter either. We therefore find this an ideal game during our backpack trips. Playing time is about 15 minutes and you can play it with 2 to 5 players. We ourselves have played it several times with 7 players which is also fine.
