The game Uno

What is the purpose of Uno

In UNO, each player is dealt 7 hand cards at the beginning of a round. The goal is to play these cards first. You always start with one card face-up on the discard pile. Then, one by one, everyone may discard a card that corresponds in value, colour or symbol to this top card.

If you don't have one in your hand, you unfortunately have to take a card. If you only have one card left, you must call ‘UNO’. Don't you do this? Then you have to take 2 cards. Do you manage to get rid of your cards first? Then you are the winner. Do you want to play consecutively? Then work with the official scoring system. You then play until one of the players has a total of 500 points or more.

What type of cards do you have at Uno?

In total, there are 108 different cards in the game. These cards contain the ciders 0 to 9 and have 4 different colours (green, red, yellow, and blue). Each card appears twice in the game, except the 0. The remaining 30 cards are ‘action’ cards and have different values such as skip a turn, change colour & flip player order.

Besides the rules of the game, it is useful to know how to play the game Uno. We have divided this into 3 parts:

1. Start of the game. At the beginning of the game, each player is given 7 cards. The remaining cards form the draw pile. It is important that these cards are face down. This prevents you from seeing which card the other player draws. Next, the top card from the draw pile is taken and placed in the middle (face up). This is the starting point of the game.

2. Game progression. The player to the left of the dealer may begin. The idea is for this player to put up a card that is the same in number, colour or symbol as the card in the middle. Can the player not make a match? Then he or she must take a card from the draw pile. Does the player pick a card that he can immediately put up? Then he may do so immediately and the player does not have to wait until the next round. Does he draw a card that doesn't match either? Then it's the next player's turn.

Tip: You can choose the dealer at random. However, if you want to follow the official rules or there is a fight between them (very recognisable), each player takes a card. Then all players turn over the card and the player with the highest card is the dealer. Here, an action card counts as zero.

3. Winning the game. Do you only have one card left in your hand? Then you have to shout ‘UNO’. Don't you do this? Then you have to draw two cards from the pile. The player who plays all his cards first wins the game. Read more about the scoring below!

What do the action cards mean in the game Uno?

There are 108 different cards in the game UNO. These cards contain the ciders 0 to 9 and have 4 different colours (green, red, yellow, and blue). Each card appears twice in the game, except the 0. The remaining 30 cards are ‘action’ cards to which an action is linked. In total, there are 6 different ‘action’ cards:

1. The +2 card. Does your predecessor put up a ‘+2 card’? Then you have to take 2 cards from the deck and skip a turn. Unfair but great for the game! Fortunately, you may also immediately place a ‘+2 card’ on top and the person after you has bad luck. This card may only be placed on a card of the same colour or another ‘+2 card’.
2. The turn-around map. This changes the direction of play. This action card may only be placed on a card of the same colour or another ‘’turn-over card’’.
3. The salad turn-over card. When playing this card, the next player must skip a turn. This action card may only be placed on the same colour or another ‘’skip turn-over card’’.
4. The choice card. The choice card indicates which colour will be used to continue playing. You can always discard this card.
5. The +4 card. The player who plays this card determines the colour in which play continues & obliges the next player to take 4 cards. The 4 cards taken may not be played immediately, so the player will have to wait for their next turn. The ‘+4 card’ may only be played in ‘emergency’. That is, you may only play this card if you cannot make any other valid move. You may, of course, bluff and throw up the card anyway. If you are caught, a penalty follows. All penalties are listed below.

What are the penalties at Uno?

Punishment, sounds a bit heavy-handed but it is part of the Uno game rules. There are a number of rules that you must follow. If you don't stick to them, a penalty can follow. The consequence is often taking extra cards. Below, we list all the penalties.

1. Do you forget to call out the word UNO when you only have one card left and you get caught? Then you have to take two cards from the draw pile.
2. Are you trying to sneak together by asking to discard a specific card? Then you have to take two cards.
3. Do you put a wrong card on the discard pile? Then you have to take your card back along with two extra cards. You only have to do this if you are caught.
4. You play a +4 card, while you can put up another card. The player who has to take the four cards may ask you to show all your cards. Did you indeed cheat? Then you must take the four cards. Are you falsely accused? Then the player who accused you takes two more cards.

What are additional Uno game rules I can use?

Above, we have basically explained all the standard Uno game rules. But, you can of course easily add some more game rules here. It must remain exciting, of course! Try the game rules below.

1. You may be on a +2 card another +2 cards down. This means that the next player may take 4 cards or also lay down a +2 card himself and so on. The player who finally cannot place a +2 card must take the total sum of the cards.
2. You can do the same with a +4 card. The moment a player puts down a +4 card, the next player may put down a +4 card here. This continues until one player can no longer lay down a card. That player must take the total sum of cards. The player who discarded the last +4 card may determine the new colour.
3. Even more fun and that is that you get to put all + cards on top of each other. We actually use this unwritten rule all the time! You may put on a +2 or +4 card so put infinitely on top of each other until one of the players can no longer put up a + card. That player must then take the right amount of cards.
4. If the number card 0 is played, all players pass their cards to the player next to them.
5. If the number card 7 is played, the player may play again. We then often say 7 = sticking.

How does the scoring in Uno work?

How do you win Uno? By playing away all your cards first. You can choose to name a winner per game or you can work with the official point count. With this count, the idea is that all players who still have cards in their hands add up the points of these cards. The winner of a round gets the points of all players added together. The game ends when a player totals 500 points or more.
